Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. The Chief State Steward serves as chairman to the Board of Stewards serving as liaison between the Board and Commission staff by enforcing the rules and regulations through supervision of the running of all races. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. The Chief State Steward supervises the running of the races along with the other two stewards. Makes decisions on all inquiries and objections on any occurrence happening during the running of the races and determines if there were any rule violations. Acts on the validity of claims of horses filed during the racing program. Files with the Commission a report on the racing program. Schedules hearings before the Board of Stewards on rule violations and files with the Commission decisions made at the hearings. Reviewing with the jockeys, owners and trainers the previous days videotape replay of the previous days racing program when necessary. Shares duties and responsibilities with the other stewards by supervising the taking of entries for the next racing program, scratching of horses entered for immediate racing program, sale and transfer of horses from one owner or trainer to another, and being available to all other licensees to discuss any problems they might wish to discuss. Maintains a rapport and cooperation with officials at nearby tracks by exchanging information on problems that are of mutual interest. Answer all stewards correspondence as required. Availability at home for management and for the state veterinarians at the lasix security barn with respect to any problems which might arise between leaving the track after morning duties and arrival at the track for the racing program. |
