Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Responsible for thorough workup of all patients under his/her care, including performed detailed psychiatric examinations and making appropriate diagnosis in keeping with the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. Prescribes the indicated treatment orders and interprets consultations, laboratory and other findings. The staff psychiatrist is responsible for the overall treatment of patients and has full authority to make medication selection appropriate for treatment. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Makes ward rounds daily. Acts as Team Director in conducting Team meetings and is responsible for formulating Comprehensive Individual Treatment Plans (ICTPs), drawing upon the expertise and advice of the interdisciplinary staff to establish treatment goals and to assure that the treatment modalities recommended at team meetings are provided. Develops the treatment program for the continued progress and improvement of all patients under his/her care. Confers with the interdisciplinary staff and consulting medical staff. Confers with patients and their families on treatment and care to prepare them for re-entry in the community. Prepares comprehensive reports of detailed psychiatric examinations, weekly and monthly progress notes, 28-day team reviews and revision of individual treatment plans and discharge summaries. Also prepares the competency/incompetency assessments. Attends Medical Staff meetings, Visiting Professor Lectures, Psychiatric Department meetings, Individual Case Conferences and consultations on the units with the psychiatric consultant and other committee meetings as and when assigned. Maintains all requirements for continued medical licensure and maintains a current license to practice medicine. Executes commitment procedures. Attends court hearings to testify at the hospital as well as at the courthouse in regard to habeas corpus hearings, competency hearings and guardianship hearings. For psychiatric emergencies, responds to hospital/patient emergencies by assuming a leadership role to provide direction and management expertise to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT). Provides the patient with individual instruction, medical treatment or medication as indicated by clinical assessment and the hospital’s policies. Utilizes verbal techniques to address patient concerns and prescribes appropriate medications, when necessary, to assist in de-escalation. Directs placement of patient in restraints and ensures resolution of the emergency situation. For medical emergencies, announces the medical emergency and initiates appropriate medical actions/interventions. These could include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, foreign body airway obstruction management or other emergency treatment procedures for which the physician has been trained. Assumes a leadership role to provide direction and management to the Medical Emergency Team. Following the emergency, takes appropriate action according to WSH Policies and Procedures. For disaster/emergencies, e.g. fires, earthquakes, floods, hazardous materials incidents, utility interruptions or transportation accidents, follows basic emergency procedures as contained in WSH Policies and Procedures, including evacuation of patients, if needed. Performs risk management education by enforcing hospital standards of documentation, legibility and use of accepted abbreviations and notation, by participating in the development of guidelines for informed consent, by peer review activities and presentation of case in a case conference milieu. Maintains awareness of American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association and appropriate DHS policies, guidelines and standards for licensing, privileging and patient care. Collaborates or substitutes for PMHCRNP Prescriptive Authority application. Participates in hospital-wide and departmental PI Plan by performing assigned audits and reviews on a monthly basis. Completes Medicare billing forms as appropriate for all treatment interventions involving Medicare Part B eligible patients. Ensures completeness of clinical portions of all charts and ensures adequate documentation and justification of treatment methods. Enters Electronic Medical Records (EMR) orders and documentation. Performs other related duties as assigned. ADA Essential Functions: 1. Effectively communicates, interprets, comprehends and understands. 2. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic approach and relationship with patients. 3. Performs the functions of Treatment Team Director and maintains a sound relationship with the other members of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team and other professional and non-professional staff. 4. Clearly expresses ideas and information orally and in writing. 5. Listens and makes detailed observations in order to perform comprehensive psychiatric assessments and to monitor ongoing treatment. 6. Analyzes and interprets observations and data to establish diagnoses and differential diagnoses. 7. Travels throughout areas of the hospital to attend to the needs of the patients and to attend and participate in hospital meetings and perform committee and departmental functions. 8. Participates in OMHSAS approved training and utilizes approved Crisis Response interventions as needed to maintain safety. 9. Remains on grounds at all times, or maintains a personal residence (either full or part-time) in close enough proximity to the grounds to allow for a 10-minute response time to all emergencies when functioning as an on-call physician. |
