Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

To provide the best possible services to the public and the natural resources we oversee, this position operates and maintains CDL-rated heavy equipment and machinery to assist with the maintenance of state forest land and infrastructure and assists with regular maintenance activities, forest fire suppression and other duties as assigned throughout the forest district.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Equipment Operation

1. Operates specialized equipment with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more used in the transport of materials.
2. Operates equipment used in snow removal.
3. Operates snow-grooming equipment.
4. Operates pick-up trucks that may be equipped with fire suppression tanks or gear, snowplows and salt/cinder spreading units.
5. Operates bulldozer.
6. Operates tractor mowers with sickle bar or articulated attachement.
7. Operates backhoe and front-end loader with capacities less than three cubic yards.
8. Operates skid-steer unit with attachments.
9. Operates fork or hi-lifts.
10. Operates road grader and roller.
11. Operates other equipment as assigned that may be rented or purchased.

Maintenance and Repair

1. Perform scheduled oil changes, lubrication and tune-ups on automotive, commercial and heavy equipment.
2. Change water pumps and hoses.
3. Change fuel filters and bleed fuel lines.
4. Perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment.
5. Change hydraulic filters and hoses.
6. Maintain and repair hand tools.
7. Repair flat tires.
8. Repair tracks on dozer or other tracked equipment.
9. Tune up small engines.
10. Spray paints equipment.
11. Completes safety checks and inspections on equipment prior to operation and maintains records of operated equipment; including those of commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds gross weight, as appropriate.
12. Perform manual work or other tasks as assigned when not operating trucks or equipment.

Maintain State Forest Facilities

1. Prepare and paint buildings.
2. Prepare and paint signs.
3. Cut brush and grass at facilities, along rights-of-ways, and wildlfie areas.
4. Grade, rake, and final finish roads.
5. Install culvert pipes, head and tail walls, and appropriate erosion and sedimentation control devices.
6. Plow snow and groom recreational trails
7. Build and maintain facilities including wood and metal projects.
8. Paint and maintain State Forest boundary lines.
9. Load and unload road or building materials.
10. Repair bridge structures including redecking bridges.
11. Repair or replace roofs, install soffits, flashing, and spouting.
12. Operate and maintain chainsaws, power tools, fire pumps, generators, and brush saws.
13. Assist surveyors with land and boundary surveys.
14. Maintain recreation and picnic areas.
15. Collect and dispose trash from State Forest land.
16. Repair and maintain ditches, culvert pipes, and other sites by removing and clearing debris.

Forest Fire Protection

1. Assist in fire prevention activities.
2. Patrol for and suppress wildfires.
3. Investigate wildfires and complete accurate and timely reports.
4. Attend wildfire behavior and other fire training courses.
5. Serve as fire tower lookout when necessary.
6. Operate and maintain fire fighting equipment and vehicles.
7. Assist other agencies in wildfire supppression activities as needed.
8. Assist with prescribed fires and follow standards of Bureau of Forestry and PA Prescribed Fire Council.

General Forest District Operations

1. Assist with equipment training programs.
2. Assist with fire training programs.
3. Function as lead worker on various district projects.
4. Participate in establishing work goals.
5. Assist in purchasing tools, equipment or materials in accordance with Department purchasing regulations.

Has free range to make decisions in order to accomplish the items listed in the Description of Duties area of this position description. Seeks advise from supervisor when decisions may have political impacts. Consults with supervisor to ensure expenses are in line with budget constraints.

Essential Functions

 1. Perform strenuous outdoor work and negotiate uneven and rough terrain.
 2. Maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and an appropriate CDL license.
 3. Communicate effectively and clearly with co-workers and the public.
 4. Learn and apply the state and federal laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
 5. Read, interpret and follow various policies and procedures so that operations are carried out according to guidelines.
 6. Learn and practice new techniques to maintain and repair District equipment and perform maintenance tasks.
 7. Perform routine maintenance of district facilities.
 8. Lift and move heavy objects and work under adverse weather conditions.
 9. Carry Indian tank, use fire suppression equipment, withstand extended periods of strenuous activity.
 10. Use power tools and hand tools safely and effectively.
