Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The purpose of this position is to have a qualified clinician provide direct psychological services to patients with serious and persistent mental illness. The clinician who fills this position is expected to help ameliorate acute symptoms of mental illness and help patients develop skills to recover from the effects of their illness.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

This clinician is expected to provide a variety of psychological services, consultative services and Treatment Team services to patients with serious and persistent mental illness. This employee provides these services by:

1. Providing individual psychological treatment services that are in keeping with best-practices guidelines and established departmental protocols;
2. Conducting psychoeducational groups which teach patients skills to manage their psychiatric problems and engage in their recovery process;
3. Conducting a variety of assessment procedures as directed by their supervisor. These assessment procedures could involve testing of intelligence, cognitive capabilities, personality features, neuropsychological deficits, functional levels and psycho-pathological conditions;
4. Developing and implementing behavioral contingency programs that help patients manage their behaviors and reach treatment goals;
5. Evaluating newly admitted patients and annually reviewed patients using interview procedures and/or psychological test methods to aid the interdisciplinary treatment team to develop treatment plans and goals;
6. Consulting with families and community representatives of patients to develop supportive approaches to facilitate patient functioning in a less restrictive living arrangement;
7. Serving as a Treatment Team Coordinator for an interdisciplinary Treatment Team
8. Provide psychological expertise to assigned committees and hospital projects as needed.

Essential Functions:
1. Is knowledgeable of current best-practice methods to conduct both individual and group psychological services;
2. Is knowledgeable to administer, score, analyze and report psychological assessment procedures in the areas of intellectual functioning, cognitive capabilities, neurological screenings, personality descriptions and psycho-pathological conditions;
3. Is knowledgeable of the causes, symptoms and empirically based treatments for serious and persistent mental illnesses;
4. Expresses both orally and in writing ideas that are logical, coherent, and informative and that utilize the English language;
5. Can ambulate to patient living areas, nursing stations and treatment areas without assistance from others;
6. Can work in a civil and collaborative manner with other staff and supervisors.
7. Participates in OMHSAS approved Crisis Response training and utilizes approved Crisis Response interventions as needed to maintain safety.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

This Psychology Department clinician is expected to independently determine the readiness and need of patients for involvement in group therapy, individual therapy, and psychological assessment procedures. This employee is also expected to independently be able to provide accurate information about patients’ psychological functioning and progress to Treatment Teams. To determine when and how to prioritize treatment services, especially when working with treatment waiting lists, this employee is expected to consult with and take direction from their immediate supervisor. This employee also is expected to work closely and take direction from their immediate supervisor when providing best-practices treatment services to reduce trauma-based symptoms of patients.
