Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. An employee in this job is a Certified Peer Specialist and is responsible for providing peer support services by serving as a consumer advocate, providing information and support for consumers in inpatient and outpatient settings, and assisting consumers in regaining control over their own lives through the recovery process. Work involves collaboration with peer mentors, other hospital staff, family and community members, and other advocates to assist consumers in self-identifying personal goals for recovery, determine steps to reach recovery goals, and provide an environment of mutual respect, empowerment, and opportunities within their communities. Work also involves providing information on public services, educational opportunities, employment/vocational skill supports, as well as actively listening to and advocating with consumers reflectively to recognize their strengths and recovery options. Work is performed under supervision of a mental health professional and work effectiveness is evaluated by observation and review of documentation and work outcomes. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Utilizing Peer Specialist Training, the Certified Peer Specialist will: Lead as well as teach consumers how to facilitate recovery dialogues utilizing individual focused conversation as well as group methods. Assist recipients in creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) during individual and group sessions. Assist consumers in completing Pennsylvania State Hospital Peer Assessment for Community Support Plan (CSP). Attend meetings, such as Treatment Team and Community Support Plan, as scheduled, related to peer support. Facilitate groups as assigned, develop, or assist in the design and development of new groups. Utilize and teach problem solving techniques in the context of group learning. Teach individuals how to identify and overcome fears. Support individual’s vocational choices and assist in overcoming job-related anxieties or other issues. Assist individuals in building social skills in the community to enhance broader recovery goals. Observe and document individuals’ progress in achieving program objectives. Act as a role model for consumers in areas such as identifying personal strengths, conflict resolution, communicating effectively, participation in treatment planning and carrying out objectives of the plan. Provide advocacy services to individuals/consumers in identifying personal strengths. Provide system advocacy to promote the development of needed services not available and the understanding of consumer perspectives regarding the mental health delivery system. Provide information to consumers regarding mental health, legal, housing, educational, medical, financial, parenting, peer, or other support services. Assist individuals in understanding and exercising their rights. Assist and support the facility in maintaining a safe, peaceful environment. Project a positive and professional image in or outside the facility during work duties. Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers at the facility. Attend workshops, seminars, and trainings to maintain a current perspective and skills in the provision of mental health, advocacy, and recovery services. Maintains PA driver’s license. Provide department coverage as needed. |
