Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Performs basic functions associated with the drug distribution system by preparing medications as prescribed by a practitioner in order that they be reviewed by the pharmacists and delivered for administration to patients by nursing personnel Applies basic principles of drug dynamics by utilizing working knowledge of drug dosages, rules of administration, and dosage forms in order to process transactions such as stock orders, LOA RX documentation and appropriate reports without error. Processes medications records or patient drug profiles by applying parameters reviewed from a registered pharmacist in order to assist in drug utilization reviews, filing of drug orders, outdated drug reports, and monthly reports. Demonstrates a working knowledge of pharmaceutical-medical communications by interpreting correctly working terms, measuring systems, abbreviations, and symbols in order to function accurately with the characteristics of prescribing, dispensing, and charting of medications. Performs basic functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory controls by preparing requisitions for purchasing, posting to the computer, typing, handling credits or destruction, stocking shelves, utilizing receiving reports in order to provide an accountable, safe, and secure level of drugs and allied supplies. Assists in manufacturing, packaging, and labeling of drugs by applying designated procedures in order to stock medications for distribution. Visits medication units daily or through performing pharmacy monthly inspections of nursing station drug rooms, utilizing an established format for compliance in order to determine adherence to policies, procedures, and directives relating to drugs and allied supplies. Gather, assess, and analyze computer data by utilizing spreadsheet information, parameters established for drug utilization reviews, and ancillary physician order information in order to provide pharmacist with the time to expand the clinical role and establish pharmaceutical care processes. Facilitate and utilize the drug automation process by utilizing medication bar coding technology, and Pyxis related software, in order reduce the potential for medication errors and maximize drug accountability. Facilitate inventory control and pharmacy operations by understanding the utilization of drug wholesaler software, unit dose packaging machines, pharmacy software, dispensing cabinet hardware/software, electronic health record, and spread sheet concepts, in order to ensure compliance with physical and inventory control of medication. Clerical duties as required. Participates in OMHSAS approved crisis response training and utilizes approved crisis response interventions as needed to maintain safety. Applies the principles of USP 800 Hazardous medication safety to everyday pharmacy activities including, packaging of medications, delivery of medications, storage of medications, and receiving of medications. Decision Making: Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. The Pharmacy Technician in this position works under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy (Chief Pharmacist). All work is performed within the framework of established policies, procedures, standards. laws, and regulations set forth by the Director of Pharmacy and various Federal and State Agencies regulating the professional practice of Pharmacy. All work is reviewed by a pharmacist. Standard and routine tasks will be performed as scheduled by the pharmacy director. Independent judgment utilizing prioritization skills may be used. All duties involving the mechanics of medication distribution will be supervised directly by a pharmacist according to state and federal standards prior to medication leaving the pharmacy. Transcription of orders to the computer will be under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Questions regarding clinical information of medication will be referred to a pharmacist. Direct questions about pharmacy policy and procedures may be answered without supervision if well defined in the pharmacy procedure manual All questions regarding pharmacy policy and procedures requiring judgment and interpretation outside the normalcy of day-to-day function will require pharmacist consultation Data gathering for adverse drug reactions, medication errors, and other areas of chart documentation may be accomplished independently. Interpretation of data gathered will be under the direct supervision of the pharmacist. Input at assigned committee meetings should be candid. All recommendations on behalf of and outside of the pharmacy regarding pharmacy non-routine issues will be cleared by a pharmacist. |

Requirements Profile: Identify any specific experience or requirements, such as a licensure, registration, or certification, which may be necessary to perform the functions of the position. Example: Experience using Java; Professional Engineer License Experience: MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities) • One year of experience assisting a licensed pharmacist in the preparation and dispensing of medications in a pharmacy; or • An equivalent combination of experience and training. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • All positions require active authorization to practice as a Pharmacy Technician in Pennsylvania. • All employees possessing an active temporary registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee must obtain registration as a Pharmacy Technician within the two (2) year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
