Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The staff psychiatrist is responsible for the care and treatment of mentally ill patients in a designated service area and has professional responsibility for diagnosis, determination of treatment methods and leadership in the implementation of treatment plans. The staff psychiatrist is a driving force for the treatment of the patient which includes medication regimens.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Provides for the psychiatric needs of patients by examination to determine the presence of mental illness, obtaining a medical history, diagnosing illness, and prescribing and carrying out a course of treatment.

Prepares comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, progress reports, and prognostic status reports on the patients; for example, psychiatric assessments and re-assessments, progress notes, treatment plan review notes, financial competency assessments, and discharge summaries.

Makes unit rounds daily and checks on the care and progress of the patients.

Administers, or directs the administration of, treatments by using somatic, group, or milieu therapy and other psychotherapeutic methods and medications. Orders psychopharmacology and appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, and other tests, makes referrals to Social and Rehabilitative Services, Vocational, Services, and Educational Services, and develops necessary clinical programs in order to provide quality care for the assigned patients.

Confers with and advises members of the medical staff and allied hospital personnel, agencies, relatives, and other interested persons on the care, treatment, and prognosis of the patients. Reviews reports of patients’ laboratory tests, physical and neurological examinations, consultation reports, X-rays, and other tests, assessments, and reports.

Serves as treatment team director responsible for the direction and coordination of the team members from various hospital disciplines in the implementation of the patients’ comprehensive treatment plans. Formulates the psychiatric component of the treatment plan, including goals and objectives for the patients.

Monitors patient progress by attending and participating in staff conferences for the discussion of the diagnosis, treatment, or discharge of patients, in order to ensure consistency of patient care.

Directs and instructs other professional and non-professional staff, including students and residents, in the care and treatment of mentally ill patients.
Testifies as an expert witness in legal proceedings regarding the patients, such as recommitment hearings, financial competency hearings, and other legal proceedings, as indicated.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor, or designee and the facility CEO and CMO

Is responsible for the psychiatric care of all assigned patients. Consults with the supervisor for complex psychiatric issues. Consults with the somatic provider for provision of comprehensive care.

Serves as treatment team director and is responsible for the psychiatric care of all assigned patients. Consults with the supervisor for complex psychiatric issues. Consults with colleagues and somatic providers. Consults with hospital CEO and other Executive Staff for any needed additional care supports.
