Position Purpose:

This position is assigned to the Sexual Responsibility Treatment Program at Torrance State Hospital requiring security, treatment and specialized programs services for who are committed under legislative Act 21. The employee works with residents daily to provide behavioral management ensuring safety and implementing treatment services according to residents individualized treatment plan. Work is categorized by working closely with residents daily providing behavioral management and making necessary observations and implementations for safety. An employee in this class is responsible for carrying out various resident activities related to therapeutic activities and other activities of daily living for individuals and groups. Instruction and assistance to residents carrying out therapeutic activities and other daily tasks as prescribed in individualized treatment plan, while challenging residents on their identified problem behaviors, helping residents to identify and problem solve, securing and observing areas on the unit such as, restrooms, shower areas, bedroom and other scheduled activities. Assistance is provided to the treatment team staff and implementation of individualized treatment plan reporting and documenting the residents behavior and incidents as they occur in the health record and providing physical care security and supervision of the residents daily. Assists and provides input to the professional staff in the care of residents with their duties supervised by registered Nursing staff and Registered Nurse Supervisors.

Description of Duties:

Work is performed independently in accordance with established rules, regulations, and formats. Guides and encourages residents in self-care skills and activities of daily living, such as bathing, oral hygiene, shaving, hair care, nail care, dressing, and other personal care needs in accordance with the individualized treatment plan and facility care plans.
Monitors individual’s sleep and provides assistance as needed during the night.
Observe for signs of behavioral disorder or tension and reports such observations to Registered Nurse Supervisor, Registered Nurse, and treatment team. Communicate observations orally and in writing. Counsel with clients regarding facility, domestic or emotional adjustment problems or behavioral issues in accordance to their individualized treatment plan. Guide residents in developing acceptable and responsible behaviors.
Observe and report behavioral changes daily orally and in writing and participate in treatment team meetings. Assist treatment team in implementing and recommending modifications to individualized treatment plan.
Understands and interprets goal and written instructions, communicates with hospital staff.
Records attendance of patients provides documentation on patient’s progress towards established treatment goals per established guidelines. As well as, maintaining shift summaries, incident reports, and other documentation requirements.
Participates in gathering data for the formal assessment of patient’s assets and needs, and provides feedback to professional staff regarding therapeutic activity techniques to modify or maintain patient functioning and/or behavior. Maintains work area/equipment at optimal working conditions, promotes safety/cleanliness, informs supervisors, as necessary, of any needs.
Establishes effective and cooperative working relations with the other staff, maintaining objectivity and diplomacy.
Participates in in-service training programs in therapeutic activities and Sexual Offender treatment as assigned.
Performs related duties as required to meet needs of department and/or hospital in compliance with DHS, Torrance State Hospital, Act 21/SRTP and departmental rules, regulations, and guidelines. Participates in all safety drills and required training.
Conduct individual and group therapeutic activities.
Works effectively with patients to fully utilize their potential, assist them in therapeutic activities programs.
Makes programming and patient care decisions based on training, job knowledge, and in consultation with other professional staff and supervisors.
Instructs and provides guidance on activities related to housekeeping duties, such as cleaning and caring for furnishings, bedroom cleanliness, laundry, and organization while maintaining a comfortable environment.
Monitors outgoing phone calls.
Conduct building searches and body searches of residents as indicated by Director/Supervisor and PRN. Conduct individual searches with the residents and visitors before and after visits to ensure residents do not receive contraband.
Visually monitor in person visiting. Reviews visiting list prior to conducting visits.
Maintain and report safety and security issues related to environment such as checking windows and screens, searching residents rooms, and reporting deficiencies and concerns to the Directo/Supervisor ensuring staff and residents safety. Carries a radio and utilizes for communication between units and staff.
Escorts patients to and from areas of the building and the therapeutic activities area(s).
Secures and escorts residents to on-grounds and off-grounds medical appointments, therapeutic activities, court hearings and specially activities as designated according to residents level. Employee continually and visually accounts for all patients in accordance with the applicable policies and procedures.
Applies and monitors cuffs and shackles as needed for trips.

Receives general assignments and direction for routine duties and responsibilities for providing security, supervision and training to SRTP residents by the Registered Nurse Supervisor. On ward, duties will also be supervised by the Registered Nurse/Team leader assigned to that ward. This includes the care, custody, and control of the residents as well as instruction and supervision of residents in their daily living tasks.

Essential Functions
