Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The physician in this position is primarily responsible for providing quality medical care and treatment, health maintenance and preventive services, patient safety, and related medical functions for assigned patients at Torrance State Hospital Regional Forensic Psychiatric Center.

Provides care for all Torrance State Hospital patients depending on patients' needs with assignments at the discretion of the Chief of Medical Services.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs Admission Physical & Neurological Exam and obtains Medical/Surgical History on all new admissions on the day of admission, reviews all records, documents assessments, formulates medical diagnosis, treatment goals and plans for all individual patients.

Prescribes appropriate diet, medications, other treatment modalities.

Educates patient about medical problems, proper diet and preventive measures to keep patient's physical health in optimal condition.

Provides health maintenance and preventive services by performing annual physical and neurological examinations, review and summary of previous year’s medical illnesses and treatment, and providing such services as are indicated by the results of these assessments. Provides ongoing preventive services by use of such measures as immunizations, etc.

Renders medical treatment to all patients in assigned areas on a daily basis by making daily unit rounds, examining all patients who are physically ill or injured, ordering labs, x-rays and other diagnostic studies and consultations as necessary. Reviews results of studies, reports, consultations and provides follow-up care where indicated. Makes a progress note substantiating all treatment and orders. May be assigned to provide medical coverage in other areas, as needed. In the absence of the psychiatrist, conducts Treatment Team Meeting, reviews and revises treatment plan including med reviews, goals, monthly summaries and provides direction to the Treatment Team.

Identifies patient’s medical treatment needs and facilitates patient’s transfer to acute care hospital for emergency or non-emergency acute medical treatment. Maintains regular, cooperative communication with the acute care hospital physicians while patient is receiving treatment there. Provides supervisor and treatment team with regular updates on patient’s medical condition and resumes responsibility for the continued treatment upon transfer back to Torrance Stste Hospital.

Ensures the unit attending psychiatrist and Treatment Team are aware of patients with medical illnesses and current treatment orders.

May meet personally or contact patient's relative by phone and may conduct inquiries with consultants to discuss matters related to the psychiatric or medical ststus of patients.

Attends assigned medical staff and hospital committee meetings and participates in committee work as assigned.

Actively participates in Active Treatment proramming.

For medical emergencies, initiates appropriate medical actions/interventions per Torrance State Hospital's emergency policies. Assumes a leadership role to provide direction to the involved clinical staff. Following the emergency, takes appropriate action according to TSH Policies and Procedures.

For disaster/emergencies e.g. fires, earthquakes, floods, hazardous material incidents, utility interruptions or transportation accidents, follows basic emergency procedures as contained in TSH Policies and Procedures and Emergency Management Plan.

Provides Medicare billing information as appropriate for all treatment interventions including Medicare Part B eligible patients.

Participates in Hospital-wide and Department PI Plan by performing assigned audits and reviews as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


ADA Essential Functions:

1. Provides direct medical care to patients including making rounds, conducting physical examination, establishing diagnoses, prescribing medications/treatments, and transferring seriously ill patients to general hospital.

2. Performs comprehensive admission and annual physical examination, neurological examination and medical history of patients at Torrance State Hospital and writes progress notes.

3. Assembles, analyzes, and interprets data to formulate medical diagnoses, treatment goals and plans based on evaluation of the patient, and in absence of the psychiatrist, conducts Treatment Team Meeting, reviews and revises treatment plan including med reviews, goals, monthly summaries and provides direction to the Treatment Team.

4. Dictates or write reports related to medical or administrative issues, and documents clearly in medical record.

5. Responds to medical emergencies throughout the hospital.

6. Participates on Medical Staff and hospital committees as required.

7. Participates in Hospital-wide and Medical Staff Performance Improvement.

The work is performed independently subject to review through conferences, consultations and review of reports. Supervision is provided by the Chief of Medical Services.
