Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. This position has direct responsibility to protect the park’s resources, to maintain a safe environment for recreational activities and to provide information, assistance, and service to the visiting public at a large state park complex. Individuals employed in this position must set an example for the public and other employees by strictly abiding by all park rules and regulations both on and off duty; by being neat, well-groomed and wearing the proper uniform; by picking up litter; removing dead animals from roads and use areas; and by correcting other unsightly conditions whenever they are encountered; and finally, by always carrying out assigned duties in a professional and cooperative manner. Patrols Presque Isle and/or Erie Bluffs State Parks on foot, by boat, and by vehicle to provide visitor information and assistance and to ensure compliance with rules and regulations, checks all facilities and corrects or promptly reports safety or maintenance problems. Opens and/or closes various areas and facilities according to a preset schedule that varies seasonally. Is responsible for the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, public safety building, marina office, maintenance buildings, Presque Isle Lighthouse, pavilions/shelters, and Erie Bluffs when needed. Raises the flags, provides visitors information and tours, checks on pavilion/shelter renters, and marina patrons; answers telephone and radio calls; issues launch permits; runs bank deposits, picks up and delivers mail, and assists with and/or completes attendance, daily reports, daily incident logs, accident reports, lost and found dogs, incident reports, and other related reports. Issues courtesy notices and citations and makes arrest when appropriate. Assists and/or prosecutes cases on behalf of the park. Investigates accidents, reports of criminal activity and complaints and takes appropriate action. Cooperates with the PA State Police, PA Game Commission, PA Fish and Boat Commission, and other state and federal agencies regarding more serious incidents or incidents involving violations of rules and regulations of other agencies. Carries out or assist other staff with tasks relating to the marking and light maintenance of park trails and boundaries, inventory, ordering, and installation of informational, directional, or safety signing; inspects buildings, structures and facilities for security and safety; ensures the posters, bulletin boards and signs are current and serviceable; ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and neat condition; repairing or removing of hazardous conditions or situations that negatively impact on visitors’ use of specific facilities; correcting marina problems; shoveling snow from building entrances; ordering, installing and/or removing waterway regulatory buoys; and the visual checking of water and sewage plant facilities for malfunctions and the need for corrective action. May be asked to assist with or perform other park-related tasks when other personnel are not available. Coordinates and/or carries out emergency responses for incidents occurring in the park such as visitor or staff injuries, boating or vehicle accidents, environmental threats, or hazards. Cooperates with local fireman, rescue squads, police, and other agencies during emergencies and at other times when needed. Assists with special activities such as marathons, 5K’s, fishing tournaments, water boating events, walkathons, triathlons, obstacle races, and other special events. Assists with the coordination of volunteer work programs, such as those involving Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, garden clubs, bluebird box monitors, and various other volunteers. Helps keep records of volunteers, their hours worked, and projects completed. Assist Environmental Interpretation Technicians with scheduling and implementation of interpretive programs. Helps develop and maintain informational displays throughout the park complex. Provides tours and information to interested groups and seasonal park staff in order to help them develop a better understanding of the park, its resources and its history. Participates in a wide range of in-service and out-service training to improve and maintain the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the duties requires of a DCNR Ranger.
