Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 


--- This position is responsible for the routine maintenance of buildings, ground, and equipment in the Weiser State Forest District. Work assignments may be semi-skilled in nature and may work alone or with the assistance of semi-skilled or skilled workers.

---Perform routine forest fire protection work by patrolling sparsely populated and heavily wooded areas during periods of high forest fire danger to prevent, detect, locate, report, and assist in the suppression of forest fires.

---Direct groups of volunteer firefighters or work as members of special fire crews, as well as assist in fire prevention programs, parades, and school perform maintenance on buildings, roads, and firefighting equipment.

---- When assigned, performs routine forest protection work in patrolling an area to detect and suppress wildfires
---- Responds to wildfires as an initial attack resource. Acts independently when alone or as a member of a fire suppression team to suppress wildfires.
---- Participates in wildfire prevention activities intended to inform groups of all ages about the causes and hazards of fire use in order to prevent wildfires.
---- Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in construction and maintenance activities for equipment, facilities, and forest roads when not otherwise engaged in wildfire suppression activities.
--- Ability to operate small farm tractors with attachments and 5 ton dump trucks.
---- Prepares daily and bi-weekly reports of activities and submits to supervisor for review and processing
---- Assists other program areas and performs other related work as assigned and required.
---- When appointed, function as a Commonwealth-employed Forest Fire Warden and direct Local Forest Fire Wardens, Forest Fire Warden Crews, and Volunteer and Professional Fire (1) Conducts forest fire prevention programs through public contacts utilizing all available resources to enable the forest district to attain its wildfire suppression goals.
(2) Maintains assigned wildfire suppression equipment to ensure readiness in the event of a wildfire.
(3) Participates in the detection of wildfires, to ensure early discovery of wildfires occurring in the forest district on all forested and wild lands.
(4) Assists in planning and conducts wildfire suppression activities as required, utilizing available equipment and tools and directing manpower assigned. Effective wildfire suppression requires the sound application of the learned knowledge of wildfire behavior and the application of appropriate wildfire control techniques.
(5) Participates in wildfire investigations by determining cause and origin, taking notes, conducting interviews, securing evidence, and appearing as a Commonwealth witness and taking appropriate enforcement actions as required by law.
Participates in Wildfire and Safety training activities asa worker and when appropriate as a trainer.
Prepares, signs, and submits the report required for all of the preceding.


•Buildings:
oPerforms routine building maintenance
oPerforms general housekeeping and sanitary tasks in the upkeep of buildings and other
facilities
oDoes minor repairs to buildings and equipment as directed

•Grounds
oMows grass as needed
oPrunes and trims shrubbery
oClears walkways and entrances of snow, ice, and other debris
oMulches, weeds, and performs other grounds maintenance work
oApplies pesticides and does other cultural work as directed to control pests and weeds
in accordance with product labels and approved pesticide application procedures
oDoes routine clean-up of grounds, driveway, parking areas, walkways, etc., to present an
attractive appearance
Operates, maintains, and does minor repairs to mowers, line trimmers, and other tools
necessary to keep them in good working condition

OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES:

•State Forest Management.
oPerforms a variety of tasks relating to timber management, recreation, and related state
forest programs as directed
oAssist with the layout, measurement, and survey of timber sale areas.
oAssist with the measurement and marking of trees for sale.
oAssist with regeneration projects. This includes but is not limited to deer fence
construction and maintenance, herbicide project, tree planting, seed collection, and
site preparation.


OTHER DUTIES:

•Assist with search and rescue projects when directed
•Assist with forest insect, disease, and other forest health-related projects when
directed
•Attend training and meetings as directed

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

oAbility to navigate uneven and steep terrain.
oAbility to operate a motorized vehicle under a variety of weather and road conditions
and recognize vehicle limitations.
oAbility to safely operate small electric and fuel-powered gasoline tools and equipment
(e.g., riding and push lawnmowers, chainsaws, portable pumps, electric saws,
electric drills, etc.)
oAbility to use hand tools such as shovels, forks, axes, saws, mechanic’s tools, fire
tools, tree marking paint guns, etc.
oAbility to receive and understand directions.
