Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position serves as shift leader in the Power Plant for assigned tour with responsibility for controlling plant operations and making decisions on procedures to be taken and repairs to be made in accordance with standard and emergency operating practices or as directed by the Utility Plant Supervisor. This position is directed to call out employees to work to maintain adequate staffing level and initiate any action to maintain continuous generation of steam at the required pressure in accordance with safe operating practices. This position takes and tests water samples from boilers, softeners, return lines and other related equipment throughout the water and steam systems. Adjustments to chemical applications are also made. Records water readings and chemical readings daily. Documents accurate shift records and any repairs or unusual incidents at the end of each shift. Responsible for completion of all assignments for the shift including repairs, cleaning, painting and preventive maintenance. The Utility Plant Operator II must be capable of safely performing all routine and extraordinary functions within the Boiler Plant independent of supervision. Makes repairs and adjustments to pumps, fans, stokers, air compressors and related piping, wiring and controls. Maintains ash, coal, gas, steam, water and related systems.

Description of Duties:

Maintains boiler operating pressure at 44 lbs. P.S.I., 100% of the time.

Makes sure all operating emergency plant procedures are followed correctly 100% of the time.





By 7:30am, samples boiler water, and tests by 8:00am. Adds chemicals by 8:30am, 97% of the time.




Makes multiple tours of entire plant and reports any difficulties that may arise 95% of the time.

Observes all operating gas boilers, pumps and compressors for the correct operating temperature, oil levels and proper function 99% of the time.



The Utility Plant Operator 2 in charge of his/her shift the correct firing procedures, boiler and boiler room cleaning, and all emergency procedures and safety rules 100% of the time.

Wears safety hats during working hours 100% of the time.

Performs preventive maintenance on all boiler and power plant equipment which is accomplished by following oral and written instructions and by scheduling maintenance operations which are cleaning and inspection, lubrication, adjustment and repair of all plant equipment. This will ensure continued service, increased efficiency and less breakdown. Completes preventive maintenance work orders thoroughly and accurately 95% of the time. Reports any discrepancy as soon as possible 90% of the time.

Cleans boilers and boiler plant by following oral and written instructions and by preventive maintenance checklists. A thoroughly cleaned boiler and boiler plant will maintain boiler efficiency and a clean working environment. Keeps turbine equipment in good condition thus eliminating tube damage and personal safety 100% of the time. Keeps needle gun adjusted properly at all times to eliminate exterior boiler tube damage. Performs plant cleaning on each shift 90% of the time. Keeps plant in a clean condition 95% of the time.



Operates, maintains, and repairs electrical generating equipment in accordance with policies and procedures.

Cleans and paints boiler room area and plant as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.

EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSTION ARE REQUIRED TO:
1. Works in extremely dusty/dirty/hot conditions with the use of pressurized air feed respirator for prolonged periods.

2. Follows safety precautions by wearing standard respirators while performing tasks in dusty/dirty conditions.

3. Accesses narrow passageways in order to perform maintenance and inspection function of boilers and related equipment.

4. Works within small or confined spaces for prolonged periods in order to perform maintenance or cleaning functions.

5. Climbs ladders and stairs, work at heights of up to 75’ and work in severe weather conditions.
