Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. The employee occupying this position is responsible and accountable for operating a variety of medium weight, single chassis vehicles and maintenance equipment on and off the hospital grounds in support of various hospital programs, services and functions. This position is an Essential Employee. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Primary responsibility to operate facility equipment including but not limited to, light and medium weight single chassis vehicles such as trucks, cars, vans, omni-buses, etc. following established operating procedures/safety codes/laws to meet transportation needs and provide general maintenance/construction material support and seasonal snow/ice removal services. Operates tractors, skid loader, lawnmowers, chain saws, weed trimmers, power pruners, sprayers, forklift, etc. for major projects performing digging and excavating for repair and replacement of underground water, steam and electrical lines, drain repairs, road work, replace sidewalks, remove downed trees, stump removal, etc.; excavate for new construction and, after construction, bring landscape back to original contour and grade. Instruct and demonstrate operation of equipment such as excavator, track dozer and vehicles between 10,001 and 32,000 lbs., and trailers used to relocate equipment to other employees as required. Additional equipment duties requiring use of heavy equipment include escort service, general pickup and delivery services, dietary service pickup and delivery, operation of standardized motorized vehicles and equipment utilized for snow removal, grounds keeping, etc., defined as follows: Patient Escort Services (On and Off Grounds): Operate vans and buses to provide transportation for individual and group patient escort services within and outside the hospital through operation of state vehicles including transportation to on grounds clinic areas, transport to off grounds appointments and assist security to locate and return eloped patients to hospital complex. Dietary Services Pickup and Delivery: Pick up meals from main kitchen area and deliver to designated patient areas daily for 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. Make Dietary deliveries for all special functions held within the hospital including, but not limited to, picnics, meetings, dinners, etc. Deliver food items from Institutional Stores to appropriate locations as scheduled. On weekends and holidays, deliver newspapers and other mail items. In emergency situations, off-grounds pickups or deliveries may be made as time allows. Preventative Maintenance/Minor Repairs: Provide preventative maintenance according to established schedules for any assigned equipment. Check tires and all fluids, change broken hoses, replace broken wires and fuses, replace automotive light bulbs, wipers, and belts. Equipment repairs are made as assigned by the supervisor, and could include changing flat tires, changing broken hoses, replacing broken wires, fuses, bulbs, wipers or belts. Assist mechanic with major repairs when needed. Complete safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintain records on operated equipment. Snow Removal: Perform the operation of snow removal, which includes preparation of equipment before the winter season, actual snow removal, salting and cindering of roads, walkways, parking lots, etc. Utilize light and heavy equipment, as well as manual equipment, as necessary. Grounds keeping: Perform all functions of grounds keeping within the facility including, but not limited to, lawn maintenance, repair, reseeding, mowing, planting trees and shrubs, landscaping, brush cutting, weed trimming, removal of debris. Excavate water lines, storm drains, electrical lines for repairs; and restore grounds to original condition. Operate tractor-mounted grass and brush mowers, riding lawn mowers, hi-lift front-end loaders, etc. General Pickup and Delivery Services: Provide general pickup and delivery services within and outside the hospital. Complete daily rounds to each building daily for delivery of mail and other inter-hospital materials, deliver outgoing mail to central mail area in Newton Hall. Deliver patient charts/lab reports to appropriate areas as designated. Deliver oxygen tanks to areas as needed and keep records on all oxygen areas and deliveries. Deliver outside packages (UPS, FedEx, etc.) to all areas within the complex; deliver orders filled from Central Supply Department or Institutional Stores Department. Deliver secured medications from the Pharmacy to the wards. Report any problems or deficiencies in the physical plant or equipment to immediate supervisor. This position is considered "Emergency Essential" as defined in the Manual 7136.3 and must comply with all aspects of local policy. Perform other related duties as required. |
