Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provides skilled work in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plants, the water treatment facilities and all related equipment such as pump stations, sewage and water lines, manholes, etc.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee will engage in duties associated with the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant at Laurel Hill State Park to learn basic competencies and skills, and to prepare the employee to become certified as a wastewater treatment plant operator

This position performs duties that are executed seven days a week and will be routinely scheduled to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed for park operations and to meet seasonal needs.

All employees must obtain, within the probationary period, a valid Operator’s Certificate, or an Operator in Training Designation issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to or greater than a class D, subclass 1 license.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Work in conjunction with salaried/licensed operator to coordinate effective operation of park's various sewage treatment facilities.

Assist in the operation, maintenance, evaluation, and repair the various electric motors, pumps, compressors, valves, sand filters, chlorinators, aerators, water softeners, flow meters, liquid level mercury switches and related equipment used in sewage treatment plants.

Assist in the collection of water samples, perform chemical tests to determine pH level, chlorine residual, settle-able solids in the influent and effluent and determine the biochemical oxygen demand level of the sewage effluent.


Assist the salaried/licensed operator as necessary to prepare all daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports for the sewer and water systems, monitoring sewage flows and precipitation at the sewage treatment plant.

Assist in reading meters and recording findings and results as required by NPDES and WQM permits.

Assist in maintaining records on maintenance performed on equipment and prepare reports on plant operation as necessary.

Follows safety procedures for entries into confined spaces and maintains confined space entry records as required.

Assists in inspection of equipment, performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments to lift stations well houses, water storage tanks and other related equipment.

Assists in the operation of chlorinators, comminutor, aerators, motors, pumps, valves, filters, and related equipment.

Assists in the inspection of and performs preventative maintenance and makes repairs and adjustments to chlorinators.

Performs necessary plumbing repairs as required to maintain a leak free system by performing repairs to waterlines, sewer lines, comfort stations, and other park buildings containing plumbing and fixtures.

Cleans and maintains plant buildings, lift stations, well houses, and other related structures.

Maintain, repair and be a custodian to clean buildings and grounds located with these facilities, mowing lawn, weeding and landscaping around these facilities.

May be required to assist in mowing grass, hazard tree removal, and/or cleaning/repairs of park buildings.

Operates Commonwealth owned vehicles including automobiles and light trucks as necessary.

May be required to work weekends, holidays, and under unusual conditions, may be required to work a varied shift.

Performs related work as required.

Experience:
