Position Purpose:

The employee in this position performs tasks in support of carrying out individualized care plans for inmates housed at SCI Laurel Highlands


Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

The following tasks are completed under the direct supervision of a licensed professional supervisor:

75% Checks and records vital signs, height, and weight. Collects urine, feces, and sputum specimens. Monitors, records, and reports bowel and bladder habits; empties catheter bags and reports outputs. Completes, reinforces, or assists inmates with basic personal hygiene/care needs such as bathing, hair/oral/nail care, and dressing; provides complete bed care which includes lifting, positioning, and transferring of inmates from bed to chair and return to bed; prepares and serves food trays, assists and/or feeds inmates, and observes and documents eating habits; provides extra fluids as required; and observes and
documents inmate sleep patterns. Provides for inmates’ comfort and safety to include position changes, ambulation assistance, engaging side rails, protective devices, and other support devices; provides transfer assistance from chair to bath chair, toilet, or potty chair; and provides skin care and observes and documents skin breakdown. Assists with escorting wheelchair inmates to medication line, dental office, diagnostic tests, and consultations. Makes inmates’ beds daily and changes linens as necessary. Assists with the use of restraints and documents care in the medical record. Adheres to all infection control procedures and universal healthcare precautions.

5% - Receives and provides assignment reports to ensure continuity of patient care and dissemination of all information. Communicates necessary information to licensed professional healthcare staff, custody staff, and Corrections Health Care Administrator in the event of medical emergencies or situations that arise which affect the normal operations of the department. Records, retrieves, and files information in the electronic health record. Ensures timely completion and submission of daily and monthly written reports, as requested or assigned in order to meet expected deadlines.

5% Maintains an orderly, clean, safe-working environment. Communicates work hazards to a licensed professional supervisor or lead worker immediately. Adheres to all agency and facility policies and procedures.

5% Sterilizes supplies and equipment using approved methods. Inventories, orders, and maintains adequate stock of supplies and equipment.

5% Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
3. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
4. Use and maintain various equipment and tools of the nursing profession
5. Operate basic office equipment
6. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
8. Maintain an active certification issued by the PA Department of Health in accordance with assigned work
9. Visually observe inmates’ activities
10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
11. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
12. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
13. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
14. Travel as required

Identifies, documents, and reports changes in inmates’ physical condition(s) and behavior to a licensed professional supervisor. Routine duties are completed independently; however, specialized tasks are assigned by the supervisor. Supervision is received from a licensed professional supervisor who reviews work in progress, through reports, and observation.
