Position Purpose:

This position provides supervisory oversight to facility maintenance and trades staff in the performance of routine and specialized maintenance, construction, and repair tasks for the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix

Description of Duties:

This position functions in an assistive capacity to provide support to a higher-level Corrections Facility Maintenance Manager through the completion of the following duties:

30% Plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates daily operations. Determines staffing needs and priorities based on established facility and department goals and objectives. Prepares and submits an annual department budget and manages allocation factors to include controlling overtime costs. Develops, revises, and implements functional work processes and procedures. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and/or diagrams. Will also prepare sketches, update/store blueprints. Establishes, schedules, and implements department orientation and on-the-job training programs for staff and inmate workers.

30% Provides supervisory oversight to facility maintenance/trades staff in the performance of routine and specialized maintenance, construction, and repair tasks. Provides orientation and training for subordinate staff which includes reviewing applicable regulations, job requirements, and safety tips, as well as, providing special instructions in the performance of routine and specialized tasks. Administers collective bargaining agreements; evaluates and responds to employee complaints and grievances. Reviews all inmate training progress, attendance, and assignment details. Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings. Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

20% Prepares and submits routine and/or specialized reports, such as tool and caustic materials inventories, safety, production, and staff assignments. Recommends approval and/or disapproval of requisitions for tools, supplies, and equipment based on justification provided by maintenance/trades staff. Maintains personnel, budgetary, and other work records in accordance with ACA and facility requirements.

15% Acts as Tool Control Officer and Duty Officer and responds appropriately to emergencies after hours. Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with established departmental and occupational safety standards and proper precautions for accomplishing work and for handling hazardous substances. Documents and follows-up on substandard findings. Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

5% Performs other related duties as assigned.

6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
8. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
9. Work mandatory overtime, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
10. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in facility maintenance
11. Operate basic office equipment
12. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
13. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
14. Visually observe inmates’ activities
15. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
18. Travel as required

Decision Making:

Supervisors are given the latitude, within DOC/SCI policy, to make decisions that affect the daily operations of their assigned work area. A higher-level CFMM reviews performance through work results to ensure quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of work. The CFMM should be consulted for any unusual issues.
