Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position coordinates leisure time and recreational programs for inmates at the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution (SCI) Camp Hill.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

50% Plans, organizes, and conducts a variety of programs to include structured activities, wellness and decision making, individual and team sports, inmate organizations, and volunteer resources. Provides leadership for groups of inmates in recreational programs. Explains program, training requirements, and expectations required for participation in the athletics program. Provides individual and/or group instruction, coaching, and direction. Provides instruction in officiating, health, physical education, community resource knowledge, etc. Oversees staff and/or volunteers who assist in conducting activities. Oversees general recreation when no structured activities are available.

35% Assists in the administration of an inclusive recreational activities program. Participates in establishing program goals and objectives. Makes recommendations for program budgets based on existing and anticipated program needs. Conducts annual assessment of inmate population to identify interests and programming needs. Evaluates activities programs to determine effectiveness. Prepares reports of statistics, results, and/or activity reviews. Maintains program records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, as well as, ACA standards.

10% Maintains facilities and equipment assigned to the activities department. Oversees inmates in the set-up, tear-down, and maintenance of equipment and recreation areas. Oversees the storage, inventory, issuance, and maintenance of all program equipment. Prepares and submits requests for supplies and equipment.

5% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Coordinate and oversee inmates in a variety of leisure and recreational activities
3. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
6. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
7. Operate basic office equipment
8. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
10. Visually observe inmates’ activities
11. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
12. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
13. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
14. Travel as required

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

This position works independently in executing the daily operations of the activities department. Work assignments are delegated to the incumbent via verbal and/or written communications by the Activities Manager. Monthly meetings are conducted in order to review assignments and evaluate program goals and objectives.
