Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Performs public safety work participating in and supervising lifeguards involved in patrolling, observing, directing, and monitoring at Fuller Beach swimming area at Pine Grove Furnace State Park to maintain order and to ensure visitor safety. In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Plans, organizes and assigns work to subordinates; prepares and signs subordinate employees performance reviews; evaluates the training needs of subordinates and arranges for further education and training; demonstrates proper methods or techniques; and meets with subordinates to explain change to rules, regulations, policies and standards for subordinates. Supervises and participates in activities involving the rescue of swimmers in distress. Supervises and ensures lifeguards are performing their duties both on and off post. Ensures lifeguards on post are diligent and attentive to the public using the swimming area. Ensures lifeguards are prepared to act quickly and calmly during an emergency situation. Administers first aid and/or CPR to injured state park visitors. Stations at the lifeguard office and performs assistance to patrons. Inspects swimming areas and safety equipment and supplies to ensure they are safe for public use. Patrols, observes, directs, and monitors activities at a swimming area from boats, from stations on shore or from stations on the water to maintain order and to minimize the threat to swimmers and other park patrons from accidents or drowning. Remains alert at all times at assigned post. Scans the swimming area to prevent accidents and be prepared to respond to visitors in the event of an emergency. Ensures compliance with the Bureau of State Parks' swimming rules and regulations following prescribed guidelines and procedures. Informs visitors of State parks rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Calls for park rangers or park manager when situation warrants further enforcement. Inspects, or supervises the inspection of, buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition. Reports items in need of attention to the park manager or park maintenance supervisor. Inspects swimming and beach areas by checking for unsafe conditions to ensure they are safe for public use. Prepares and submits written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents. Prepares and submits lifeguard schedules to the park Administrative Assistant. Reviews subordinates timesheets to be correct for actual hours worked. Provides and participates in training sessions for Lifeguards to review and/or learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates. Supervises and performs incidental maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area, beach, and guard stations to ensure it is safe for public use. Performs related work as required. |

The employee continuously monitors the swimming area, determines when swimmers are in distress and need assistance, and takes necessary action to assist. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and addresses the issue as necessary. Employee reports/relays situational items, maintenance issues, operational issues, etc. as deemed necessary to park manager, park maintenance supervisor, park rangers. |
