Position Purpose:

This is an advanced, highly technical leadership position within the Enterprise Hosting Services team in the Office of Administration / Office for Information Technology that provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management for Enterprise Data Protection and Storage services. The role oversees the Storage team, which is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and lifecycle management of enterprise-class storage infrastructure, including SAN switching and storage capacity, to support critical enterprise systems and ensure availability, performance, scalability, and data protection across the organization.

Description of Duties:

Responsible for the daily operations of the Enterprise SAN infrastructure environment. This position supports and leads both commonwealth employees and contractors and must have advanced knowledge of IBM FlashSystem devices, Cisco SAN Switches.

Works closely with the server, networking, database, and storage team leads to ensure compatibility between all components in the environment.

Maintain a strong working knowledge of server, networking, database, storage, and virtualization technologies to support system operations and projects.

Ensure the SAN team adheres to enterprise standards for change management, incident management, and inventory management.

Continuously monitor the SAN environment and develop management dashboards to provide clear visibility into operational health and performance metrics.

Responsibilities include creating a weekly SAN capacity report and providing management with the report for the SAN environment.

Performs capacity planning for the SAN environments regularly to ensure the planned and anticipated growth of the EDC can be accommodated.

Establishes priorities for the SAN teams for assigned tasks and projects.

Establishes and maintains on-call schedules for the SAN Team.

Keeps management updated with the status of projects, develops work plans and timelines, monitors project status, and oversees the implementation of Enterprise strategies.

Responsible for overseeing all aspects of assigned projects, including creation and maintenance of work breakdown schedules, timely delivery of project deliverables, and efficient time management across project phases.

Tracks assigned tasks using a work plan.

Meets weekly with management to review assigned projects and tasks and provide status.

Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures regarding the SAN infrastructure consistent with customer requirements and Commonwealth standards.

Identifies areas where technical expertise is required within the SAN Operations Team, including training plans, and relays these requirements to the IaaS and Data Protection Manager.

Remains current with technology to make recommendations to Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) management on the technological direction of the Enterprise SAN infrastructure.

Develops plans for the managed upgrade of SAN to ensure supportability across all servers within the Enterprise.

Ensures proper security controls are in place for all Enterprise servers and storage.

Conducts research designed to improve both current and long-range goals of the Enterprise’s customers.

Works with vendors to ensure requested services or products are being provided in a manner that satisfies expected performance capabilities/levels.

Develops and implements operating procedures for staff within the Enterprise SAN Team to guide end-user requests for support and service.

Ensure compliance with established organizational service management processes, procedures, and best practices.

Provides 24/7 on-call support of the SAN environment during non-business hours.

Travel as required, including overnight stays.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Including those outlined in the CoG Plan when the Plan is activated. Responds to the designated alternate or secondary location when directed in response to a catastrophic incident.

This position exercises independent judgment in providing consulting, architectural direction, and strategic oversight for the Enterprise’s storage and backup systems. Decision-making responsibilities include directing staff and projects to address system availability, security, integrity, and performance issues; determining corrective actions and system enhancements; and resolving large-scale, complex technical problems. The role evaluates the feasibility and impact of significant changes to the storage environment, allocates human and technical resources to meet project timelines, and ensures data integrity and availability with minimal business disruption. The position advises senior management on the strategic direction of Systems Storage, establishes and enforces policies and standards, and defines the technological vision for the future development of enterprise storage systems.
