Position Purpose:

This is professional work in the development and presentation of environmental education, interpretation and outdoor recreation programs and activities at Bald Eagle State Park. This position assists with and supplements a full-time salaried EES position. Work days and hours may vary depending on programming needs.

Description of Duties:

Programming
- Plans, develops, coordinates and presents environmental education (EE), historical, interpretive and recreation programs for visitors, teachers and school students.
- Facilitates environmental and historical education and interpretive activities by conducting discovery learning activities, audiovisual presentations, teacher workshops, guided walks, and other environmental and historical learning programs.
- Schedules programs and prepares and updates lesson plans
- Assists with the development and presentation of packaged recreation and interpretive programs drawing from potential audiences staying at the Nature Inn and the campgrounds.
- Works with local tourist promotion agencies, concessionaires, local outfitters and other partners to develop and advertise interpretive programs to introduce park visitors to the outdoors.
- Works directly with the Inn Keeper and salaried EES to develop specific outdoor recreation and interpretation programs and packaged programs that promote the park and Nature Inn themes to the visitors staying at the inn.
- Provides assistance to education institutions, civic groups, and public and private organizations in developing and implementing environmental and historical education and interpretive programs, teacher in-service workshops and curriculum development.
- Implements Bureau of State Parks’ Watershed Education Program for teachers and students of local school districts.
- Assists with submitting environmental education, interpretation and recreation programming proposals for Outdoor Programming Services’ various funds as they become available. Purchases materials and equipment needed for programs and arranges for paid guest speakers in accordance with Bureau and Department purchasing guidelines. Maintains a list of approved EE funded projects.
- Coordinates or assists with the coordination and implementation of large special events at Bald Eagle State Park. Also participates in other state parks’ special events and festivals upon request if available.
- Conducts impromptu programs when there are no other programs scheduled and as time and opportunity permit.
- Works with other partners, agencies and educational institutions in promoting conservation at Bald Eagle State Park and the surrounding communities.
- Become knowledgeable with Leaders in Environmental Engineering Design (LEED) concepts and practices as they apply to the Nature Inn, new office and environmental learning center (ELC). Develop scheduled and impromptu programs on LEED concepts.
- Become knowledgeable with birds of the area, migratory birds and specifically with Bald Eagles to present programs, lead volunteers and promote the park and Nature Inn theme.
- Become knowledgeable with local native vegetation, trees, animals, fish and reptiles. And be aware of and be able to identify non-native and invasive plant species which may threaten the local ecosystem.
Other Services/duties
- Wears a prescribed uniform in a neat and professional manner.
- Required to travel, including to various work locations, meetings, and trainings.

- Provides information to park visitors on park facilities, services, & activities. becomes familiar with rules, regulations, policies, procedures, history, and environmental features of the park.
- Understands and is able to explain relationship between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Bald Eagle State Park.
- Required to attend CPR and First Aid Training.
- Required to attend NAI (National Association of Interpretation) certification training for CIG (Certified Interpretive Guide) and CIT (Certified Interpretive Trainer).
- Provides proper and efficient emergency care of park visitors, commensurate with training, or reports via radio or other approved communication device to appropriately trained employees or emergency responders. Participates in search and rescue as needed. *Lost children should be reported immediately to a supervisor, a DCNR Ranger or other law enforcement.
- Assists with organizing, operating and maintaining the parks’ environmental learning center (ELC) and scheduling its use. Also responsible for helping to maintain all audio/visual equipment associated with the ELC.
- Maintains all EE and recreational equipment and supplies.
- Assists with maintaining the parks’ informational kiosks and other exhibits to include insuring that EE information is up to date with Department, Bureau and Regional philosophies and goals.
- Attends regional EE and outdoor recreation events and programs on behalf of DCNR and Bald Eagle State Park.
- Acts as lead worker for park volunteers.
- Assists with the park’s conservation volunteer program and maintains or assists with maintaining the volunteer data base. Responsible for insuring that park volunteers are properly signed up and that volunteer projects are within the scope of approved volunteer work. Works with the park manager and assistant park manager to staff volunteer campground host positions as they become available.
- Responsible for tracking, maintaining and reporting the park’s EE attendance.

Employee may be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by the Park Manager.
