Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Enagages in training and preparation for a position requiring the following:

Serves as a public service, safety and law enforcement officer for the Park to ensure the safety of park visitors, park environment and park facilities, and to provide public contact.

On occasion, heavy physical work is required and hazardous conditions are encountered. Work is sometimes performed in inclement weather. Hiking and climbing over rough terrain is necessary. Weekend work will be common and required. Overnight travel is occasionally required.

This position performs duties that are routinely executed seven days a week and will routinely be scheduled to work varying schedules, weekends, evenings and holidays as needed for park operations and to meet seasonal needs.

Until all training is successfully completed, this position will serve in the capacity of a DCNR Ranger Trainee. Law Enforcement components of this position will not be applicable until all appropriate training has been successfully completed, verified and the candidate in this position is commissioned by the Commonwealth.

Description of Duties:

Enagages in training and preparation for a position requiring the following:

Work involves patrolling the park grounds and boundaries in order to provide public contact, ensure visitor safety, compliance with park rules and regulations and the Commonwealth’s Criminal and Vehicle Codes.

PATROLS – Operates a motor vehicle, ATV or boat to patrol park grounds at State Park. Ensures visitor safety and protection of the resource. Provides assistance to visitors as requiring help. Inspects buildings, structures and facilities for security and safety. Ensures the posters, bulletin boards and signs are current and serviceable. Ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and neat condition.

PUBLIC RELATIONS - Presents a professional Park Ranger image to the general public through uniform appearance, verbal skills, and knowledge of the park. Maintains a functional knowledge of the environment and history of the park, its rules, regulations and laws, as well as telephone skills and a presence of self-confidence. Provides information and assistance to park visitors. Staffs park offices and visitor centers when office and clerical staff are not available. Registers park visitors using the AWO reservation system when office and clerical staff are not on duty.

LAW ENFORCEMENT – Enforces the provisions of the law, especially as it pertains to State Parks, makes physical arrests and issues citations and warrants consistent with State, Departmental and Bureau Directives, guidelines and regulations. Investigates complaints, accidents and crimes. Determines actions to take, prepares incident reports and co-operates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and officers. Prosecutes cases, presents evidence and witnesses and examines and cross examines witnesses and testifies on behalf of the Commonwealth before the courts. Maintains property logs, Evidence Logs, lost and found articles, and attendance reports. Maintain radio equipment inventory and repairs.

EMERGENCIES – Takes charge in emergency situations to ensure the safety and protection of the visitor and the resource. Provides first aid and CPR consistent with current certifications. Directs traffic.

REPORTS AND INSPECTIONS – Completes daily logs including the status and condition of campgrounds, facilities, equipment, visitor safety, occurring incidents, citations, arrests, accidents and attendance. Generates well written Incident Reports utilizing the Incident Reporting System.

MISCELLANEOUS – Employee performs any lawful task assigned by DCNR Ranger Supervisor, Designee, or Manager that does not breech current union contract or DCNR Policy

Enagages in training and preparation for a position requiring the following:

Patrols the park and its facilities, and responds appropriately to any situation which may arise, including safety issues, park visitors that require assistance, emergencies and violations of Commonwealth or Park laws, rules or regulations. Determines course of action to take to resolve issue and follows through. Calls for back up assistance as necessary.
