Position Purpose:

POSITION PURPOSE:
The Diesel and Construction Mechanic in Forest District 1 is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all state-owned and Federal Excess motorized vehicles including passenger vehicles, light and heavy trucks, trailers, tractors, and diesel-powered pieces of construction equipment, such as bulldozers, graders, and front-end loaders. The Diesel and Construction Mechanic is also responsible for the maintenance and repair of small gasoline engines such as those used on pumps, chainsaws, power pruners, and lawn mowers.

Description of Duties:

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance
1.Diagnoses problems on the district’s automotive and diesel-powered equipment by using electronic analyzers, hand & power tools, and road testing.
2.Repairs minor malfunctions like repairing and replacing tires; maintaining, adjusting, and replacing brakes; adjusting and rebuilding carburetors; tuning engines by replacing plugs, spark plug wires, adjusting and replacing emission control equipment; replacing parts on suspension, exhaust, electrical, cooling, and drive systems.
3.Performs preventative maintenance such as lubricating, changing oil, and changing various oil, air, and fuel filers. Also oversees equipment operators in doing these functions and instructs them on correct procedures.
4.Diagnoses, overhauls, and rebuilds engines ranging from single cylinder to large diesel-powered engines on heavy construction equipment. Repairs include replacing rings, pistons, head gaskets, crankshafts, and fuel injectors and hydraulic pumps.
5.Repairs, replaces, and maintains transmissions, clutches, ring gears, pinion gears, and transfer cases.
6.Repairs auto and truck bodies by replacing components and patching and painting minor rust spots and dents using air powered paint sprayers and special body tools.
7.Maintains, rebuilds and overhauls hydraulic systems construction equipment and attachments.
8.Performs emergency roadside service and on-site repairs.
9.Prepares vehicles for state inspection.
10.Test drives light vehicles and diesel-powered heavy equipment such as graders, bulldozers, backhoes, dump trucks, trailers, track loaders, or rubber-tired tractors to assure they are operating properly.

Tool Maintenance, Repair and Inventory
1.Orders and inventories tools, specialized engine parts, and other supplies needed in maintenance operations.
2.Maintains and repairs tools and mechanical equipment including hand tools, air powered wrenches, drills, chisels, electronic engine analyzers, hydraulic equipment, vehicle lifts, tire changer, overhead hoist, steam jenny, parts cleaner, drill press, grinders, and air compressors.
3.Maintains and repairs small gasoline engines like lawn mowers, chain saws, string trimmers, power pruners, etc.
4. Maintains the mechanic shop and its tools in a tidy and organized manner.

Administrative
1.Maintains records of service, repairs and costs of repairs to vehicles and equipment.
2.Collects and distributes periodic maintenance repair forms required by the Department Automotive Officer.
3.Inventories gas, oil, and lubricant supplies.
4.Completes daily time record of work performed and submits to DGS on a weekly basis.
5.Determines if certain repairs are cheaper to do in-house, or should be done by outside contractors.
6.Deals with state contracts on a daily basis to acquire the necessary tires, fluids, parts and repairs etc. to maintain the district's fleet and heavy equipment.

Wildfire
1.Assists with the extinguishing and preventing wildfires.
2.Maintains gasoline powered portable water pumps.
3.Employee assists with the districts prescribe fire program.

Miscellaneous
1.Operates welders, acetylene torches and plasma cutter.

The Diesel and Construction Mechanic has signatory approval to use the districts credit card for purchases of services, parts, tools, and specialized equipment related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and power tools. The employee has authority to spend $500 or less without a supervisor’s approval. Purchases that are over $500 require a supervisor’s approval. The employee has the authority to make decisions regarding routine work such as minor repairs, preventative maintenance, and vehicle inspections without supervisor’ approval. Decisions regarding major repairs will require approval by the supervisor.
