Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The primary purpose of this employee is to plan, organize and conduct therapeutic activity programs to ensure resident activities support the organizations mission of providing the highest standard of quality resident care.

Description of Duties:

Planned working time percentages are approximate and can change from day to day based on operational needs.

50%
•During activities, the employee is to observe residents’ behavior and abilities while promoting and maintaining a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment. As a resource person, the employee may be called upon to plan and provide instructions for implementing some simple social skill activities for implementation by non-professional staff and volunteer personnel.
•The planned activities should display an adequate balance between the physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. A variety of treatment techniques should be used including: sensory stimulation, community involvement, social skill building and cognitive improvement. Program areas and activities should utilize the following media: music, movement and dance, arts and crafts, table and board games, horticulture and gardening, community trips, parties, discussion groups, reading, special events, nature and basic activities of daily living.

•The employee in this classification is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting therapeutic activity programs that will assist residents in developing basic functional skills and retaining or building on existing skills. Activity programs should be person centered and planned to help residents achieve their individual goals. The employee also serves as an activity resource person for the unit to which he/she is assigned.

•The employee is accountable for completing: The Minimum Data Set (MDS), 24 Hour Initial Progress Note, Baseline Care Plan, Individual Resident Activities Assessments, ID/POC Care Plan Goals and Approaches, Progress Notes, ID/POC Reports, and any updates on assigned residents within the Electronic Health record. The employee is responsible for updating individual activity calendar and inputting attendance into the Electronic Health Record Calendar, completing resident incident reports, and completing other reports as required by departmental and Center policies and procedures. The employee must also complete the necessary paperwork to insure the smooth accomplishment of planned activities, (i.e. (Client Account Withdrawal Orders, Vehicles Request, Special Function Requisitions, etc.).

•The employee participates in assigned Treatment Team Meetings, departmental meetings, and training sessions. The employee is responsible for communicating to co-workers all pertinent information gained from these meetings. The most important of all these meetings is the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team Meeting. At this meeting, activity assessments and any other information gained in working with the residents is shared with the other members of the team. The activity goals and approaches are reviewed and updated as well.
•The employee is required to share in the maintenance of clean, safe, and healthy activity areas. All safety and fire regulations are to be understood and observed as well a departmental, hospital, and DHS operating instructions, policies and procedures. The Employee is responsible for maintaining their leave balance and providing sufficient notice when an absence is required. Related work is performed as assigned and required.

•The employee is to establish and maintain a good working relationship with co-workers and volunteers. As needed, the employee should provide guidance and instruction to volunteers about activity session expectancies, and to provide constructive suggestions pertaining to resident interaction. The employee will maintain a positive relationship with subordinates and co-workers in the planning and coordination of activity programs.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Employee plans activities schedule for assigned residents within the scope of approved activities (see Activities Program Descriptions) and approval of the Therapeutic Activities Supervisor (TAS). Large group special activities are coordinated through the TAS. Resident activities goals and approaches are established based on residents’ personal needs determined through the activities assessments and daily interactions. Employee is responsible for finding coverage for paperwork and providing team notes at team meetings in their absence.
