Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Prepares plans, details and sections of varying complexity and scope for the design and construction of abandoned mine reclamation projects.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Work assignments are received from the Drafter Supervisor. All completed work assignments are submitted to the supervisor for review.

Prepares plans, details and sections for civil and mining projects, construction contracts, reports and rights-of-way acquisitions of varying complexity and scope. Projects include abandoned mine projects, such as regrading abandoned surface mine areas, backfilling or sealing abandoned mine openings, excavating or isolating underground mine fires or coal refuse pile fires, installing mine drainage control structures, demolishing abandoned mine buildings, stabilizing subsidence prone areas, treating or abating mine drainage and other types of projects which deal with problems associated with abandoned coal mining operations, acid mine drainage involving restoration and mitigation of wetlands. Projects may also be assigned that deal with the replacement or treatment of individual water supplies which have been degraded or otherwise adversely affected by past coal mining operations.

Assist engineers in preparing projects involving all of the above-named project types. Methods include checking and interpreting cuts, fills and earthwork calculations, using the Carlson Civil and AutoCAD computer programs or by manual methods as required.

Operate and maintain large format scanning device.

Prepare details and sections as required by the Design Engineer.

Assist lower-level draftsman and DEP personnel in the preparation of drawings.

Assist in preparing and revising drafting standards.

Efficiently create and manage a filing system that will maintain non-shared files and data on personal computer.

Efficiently prepare and/or check “as-built” drawings and interpret field notes relating to the final construction plans.

Plot and check surveys manually or by utilizing the Carlson Civil program. Review aerial photography, topography and digital mapping for use by the Design Section. Assist engineers in site surveying as required.

Participate in field trips to assist the Design Section. Efficiently sketch and/or accurately measure mine features relating to the design of the project.

Perform simple drafting tasks that may also be performed by lower-level drafters when required.

Prepare charts, graphs, maps, plans and reports as required by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, Cambria District Office.

Produce prints, photocopies and/or reproductions of drawings in preparation for the final bid packages as required by a Design Section.

Review drawings and engineering data prepared by others for adherence to established departmental standards and specifications.

Efficiently assist in determining types and amounts of material required for backfilling entries, shafts or strip pits.

Obtain utility data as required.

Use the PA One Call System to provide designers and engineers information on existing utilities in the areas of excavation on all design contracts.

Promotes the Department’s mission.

Input appropriate data in a prescribed format to meet data quality standards set forth by guidance, training, and policy across all of DEP’s electronic data systems; to include ensuring accuracy and completeness of entries, and where available, the use of system specific tools to ensure duplicative entries and data quality issues are minimized.

Must attend all job-related training.

Draftsman Designers receive sketches and conceptual designs and independently make decisions on which computer program or manual methods to utilize to turn these into finalized contract drawings.
