Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position fills a necessary role within the Department of Health’s executive staff as the Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs assisting with the legislative functions of the Department.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

- Work as part of a highly cohesive team.

- Work with Legislature, Department of Health leaders and programs, other executive agencies, and their respective constituents that pertain to DOH needs.

- Work internally with Communications/Policy/Legal/Budget Office for external messaging.

- Research and respond to inquiries received from House/Senate legislative offices regarding constituents’ outreach to their respective office.

- Assist in planning, organizing, and directing the legislative functions for the Department of Health.

- Communicate directly, including attending meetings, with agency, Governor’s Legislative Office and General Assembly members and staff on legislative and constituent needs

- Review, evaluate and provide feedback on legislation from departmental programs and administrative personnel

- Play an integral role in both departmental legislative and budgetary initiatives, and assist in preparing material for legislative hearings

- Performs related duties and assignments as required.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

- This position is expected to contribute to problem solving within the Department’s Office of Legislative Affairs by making recommendations and working with the staff of the Office to develop solutions to issues.

- Review legislation and make determinations in legislative tracking

- Advise the legislative director and other senior staff on possible legislative action

- Advise legislative offices on constituent affairs

- Advise in agency policy, budgetary and legislative initiatives
