Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Performs a variety of technical duties in the inspection of materials and workmanship on bridge projects within the assigned Engineering District to ensure all work is completed in conformance with approved construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Assists a bridge inspection team leader in performing a variety of technical duties associated with the inspection of bridges and other structures in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).

Performs or assists with bridge safety inspections on existing bridges, including bridge structural members, foundations, supports and components.

Performs the inspection of all structural components such as concrete footings, abutments, wing walls, bearings, back walls, steel beams, girders, truss members, pre-stressed concrete beams, timber construction, bridge decks and wearing surfaces, expansion devices, approach slabs, relief joints, piers, bents, rivets, bolts, welds and safety features (i.e., safety parapets, guide rail, approach roadway alignment, deck geometry, vertical clearances and bridge signing). Inspects bridges for conditions such as accident damage, water scouring of footings, wear or corrosion on pins, eyebars, and other steel members, and condition of bearings. Inspects bridge components, measures bridge members, clearances, sketching and recording deterioration, and rating bridge components.

Prepares bridge inspection reports documenting findings regarding the current condition and deficiencies.

Assists in conducting underwater inspections, crane inspections and various deck surveys.

Assists in maintaining bridge inspection records to include data recorded in BMS2, iForms, photographs, and field sketches.

Assists in maintaining bridge inspection equipment and a two-year inspection cycle. The cycle will include annual, semi-annual, crane, and special inspections.

Inventories, inspects and documents current condition and deficiencies of overhead sign structures, roadway retaining walls, and high mast lighting.

Maintains Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) required documentation for all state-owned structures.

Assists in preparing a neat, systematic and well documented bridge inspection report addressing all the critical findings regarding the current condition and deficiencies to include all the NBIS required recording elements as mentioned in Pub 238.

Prepares bridge work orders and sketches for structure repairs for contractor or maintenance forces when necessary.

Employee must be knowledgeable of all the Federal and Department coding, Pub. 238 and recording manuals relating to the bridge inspection guidelines and their applications.

Interacts with Department staff, other federal, state and local agencies, legislators and the general public to ensure the effective administration of the projects.

Completes and performs master diary entries, mathematical calculations, item quantity estimates, project cost estimates, work orders, time extensions and all applicable project documentation manually or electronically. Assists in resolving field problems that are encountered.

Compiles and takes photographs, reviews sketches, and prepares an inspection review summary.

Completes, documents and checks work performed by contractors and participates as a team member as part of the inspection staff as outlined in the Project Office Manual (Publication 2) and as required by Publication 408.

Utilizes software in completing project documentation and perform direct entry of daily documentation into the electronic documentation system NextGen.

Produces reports as needed and/or required for project records and interprets the results to track progress and schedule. Tracks and checks material quantities and testing utilizing either manual or computerized methods.

Draws sketches, notes field plan changes, and maintains consolidated inspection progress and quality control reports associated with the work being accomplished.

Ensures that projects are completed in accordance with all existing regulations, policies and procedures and in an expeditious and cost-effective manner.

Attends training as required.

4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident.
5. Evaluate the contractor’s operations:
- Immediately stop any unsafe actions.
- Engage in an ongoing safety dialogue with the contractor’s leadership.

Succession Planning:
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.
Department Green Plan Policy:
Commit to following the Department’s Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department’s Green Plan Policy shall be documented in the employee’s performance review.

Fair Labor Standards Act:
Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0-hour day.

Independently inspects construction projects for compliance and advises supervisor of any issues or concerns. Work is reviewed by supervisor for results obtained.

Essential Functions
