Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This position is responsible for working with the ROC Print Center to develop proper procedures for using inkjet, laser, and impact printers, assisting Print Center staff with restart and recovery processes for both the printers and the Printer Management software, and managing the operation of Ricoh InfoPrint 5000 inkjet printers, Printronix P8220 line matrix printers, and the high‑volume Ricoh Pro 8220 laser printer, all of which are controlled remotely using Ricoh Process Director and IBM Infoprint Central. Additionally, the role involves setting up network terminal and printer definitions for PennDOT Business Partners, maintaining and coordinating printer‑related requirements, and supporting application developers by helping resolve issues in both the z/OS and zLinux operating environments. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Manage the printer support activities to provide an effective, around the clock production system, and an efficient and accessible test environment which facilitates the application development process and end user computing. Provide support for the ROC Print Center to develop proper procedures for the use of the laser and impact printing subsystems. Assist Print Center operations staff in proper restart and recovery procedures for the printing systems related to the Ricoh Process Director and Infoprint Central software. Lead the printer support activities to ensure that the integrity of all stored computer data is maintained by providing the necessary resources to manage software changes, security, backup and recovery, and performance. Consults with administrators and application developers to trouble shoot and resolve system problems. Provide support for 3D barcode and PDF417 2D barcode. Monitor z/OS performance and provide recommendations to resolve issues. Monitor activities in the zLinux environment and identify where improvements can be made. Provide support for Microsoft Azure and zLinux printing on LAN attached printers using CUPS software product. Administer the software product CUPS. Create and modify CUPS printer definitions as needed when requested through the PennDOT Remedy System. Provide support for mainframe printing on LAN attached printers using the VPS and DRS mainframe software products. Set up and maintain terminal and printer definitions for external Business Partners as requested by the PennDOT user community in the Driver and Vehicle Services Division. Troubleshoot any problems related to Business Partners printers. Administer the mainframe software products: VPS, VPS/PCL, DRS. Create or modify VPS, DRS printer definitions as needed when requested through the PennDOT Remedy System. Consult with and provide support as technical specialist in use of the PC based ELIXIR Advanced Function Printing product set. Elixir is a digital signature and AFP forms generator software package. Project management responsibilities include the setting up of projects with task lists, resource needs and time estimates using the Bureau’s project management software Office 365 Project. Provide support for Application Development Teams in the design and implementation of new systems, and maintenance projects. Support the maintenance effort by providing expertise and technical advice as required for problem determination and resolution. Meet with Pennsylvania Compute Services (PACS) Representatives to discuss software and hardware problems which may impact our availability. Review status of current projects and plan future projects. Coordinate the identification and resolution of system problems that come in through the Help Desk and are assigned to the Mainframe support area. Research, analyze and recommend printer strategies that will provide cost effective solutions for the Departments current and future printing needs. Create and maintain printer standards. Provides technical support to users of mainframe based software systems. Restore z/OS datasets as needed. Must be available for scheduled and emergency non regular work hour assignments Maintain and manage files of information relating to both administrative and technical activities Understand current Automated Data Processing concepts Understand the procedural and technical aspects of executive software/hardware relationships, installation, and upgrade processes Communicate both verbally and in writing with other employees and Business Partners. Management of this Section requires technical expertise and a working knowledge of the department’s z/Series mainframe processing environment and familiarity with the Windows based distributed platform. A working knowledge of associated subsystems and software for processing, communications, and data storage, which includes DFSMS, VTAM, TCP/IP, TSO, NETVIEW, and JES is required. A working knowledge of Automated Operations Control (AOC) and Initial Program Load (IPL) procedures and concepts and their affect on computer processing is also needed. Attendance at training sessions, conferences, hearings, and meetings is necessary at various times. Performs other related work as required. |

It involves evaluating and resolving system and performance issues, setting and enforcing printer standards, supporting application development teams, coordinating Help Desk‑assigned problems, and determining cost‑effective printing strategies. The position also requires defining and maintaining terminal and printer configurations for business partners, managing project tasks, working with PACS representatives on hardware and software concerns, and ensuring readiness for scheduled and emergency off‑hour assignments, all supported by strong knowledge of mainframe and distributed system environments. |
