Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. As a member of the GIS Section within the Geologic & Geographic Information Services Division of the Bureau of Geological Survey, with supervision and guidance, work cooperatively on assigned portions of projects, including but not limited to activities such as the following: a) Assist in preparing geologic maps, cross sections, and derivative maps. Uses GIS applications, geospatial data, tools, and queries to design and prepare maps, charts, graphics, data layers, and other visual displays to fulfill USGS grant obligations and other bureau needs. Work is performed with guidance is reviewed by a supervisor for effectiveness of results. Learns functionality by employing ArcGIS Pro tools. b) Learn under staff geoscientists in GIS and data-related applications. Learn how to provide technical guidance and support to bureau staff in the consultation in the functionality and use of geospatial data, analysis, and tools, as well as developing workflows and procedures. Use the GIS Wiki to become more familiar with PA Geological Survey methods. c) Participate in the implementation of geospatial data standards for content, format, design, maintenance, and quality assurance procedures. d) Investigate new data sources, software, equipment, and techniques for improving geospatial data collection, analysis, modeling, and display. e) Contributes to the submission of federally funded projects by standardizing these deliverables in the U.S. Geological Survey’s Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) with supervisor guidance. f) With supervisor oversight, respond promptly and professionally to inquiries regarding the Commonwealth's geological and geospatial resources, whether these inquiries originate from the legislature, an outside agency, municipality, or private citizen. g) Participate in outreach to the scientific and lay communities in the form of presentations at professional meetings, talks to groups, field trips, and written materials in published reports, papers, magazines, and guidebooks. h) Within constraints of time and budget, take advantage of opportunities for continuing education by attending pertinent geospatial and geological conferences, seminars, and short courses such as the annual meeting of the Field Conference of Pennsylvania Geologists and the annual Pennsylvania GIS Conference. i) Keep abreast of advancements in the application of geospatial technology in the geological sciences via scientific and trade journals and other sources. j) Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Division Manager, or Bureau Director. |
