Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is skilled work in the operation of specialized equipment and/or vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more.

An employee in this class also performs manual work when not operating equipment. Work involves active participation in equipment maintenance duties and performance of related work of both an unskilled and skilled nature. Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis, and employees proceed independently in the operation of the equipment without further instruction or assistance.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Operates and maintains specialized park owned or rented equipment such as graders, backhoes, bulldozers, high-lifts or front-end loaders with a bucket capacity of three cubic yards or more which are used in general construction, maintenance or grounds work, including snow removal and cindering operations.

Operates and maintains vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more, such as dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, tractors, pickup trucks, UTV’s and snowmobiles, which are used in general construction, maintenance or grounds work, including snow removal and cindering equipment. Operates and maintains pickup trucks, plow trucks, and equipment with a gross weight less than 32,000 pounds or less.

Performs or assists in the general maintenance and cleaning of all park facilities and related work including, but not limited to janitorial services, emptying trash, pick litter from park areas including roadways within park boundaries.

Performs manual labor duties by operating motorized equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters, snow and leaf blowers, mowers, and other small equipment.

Performs manual labor duties on assigned projects when not operating equipment, using hand tools such as shovels, digging bars, rakes, etc.

Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment and cleans and services equipment. Tags out equipment that is not safe to operate until repairs are completed.

Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintains records of operated equipment including those of commercial vehicles exceeding 32,001 pounds gross vehicle weight, as appropriate. Performs field adjustments to permit safe operation of equipment and to minimize wear, as appropriate.

Demonstrates the operation of assigned equipment to other employees. Maintains an awareness of others working around equipment being operated and takes steps to ensure safety by helping others avoid risks and hazards.

Cuts or assists in hazard tree removal from park areas.

Remove snow from park sidewalks by using shovels, brooms, walk behind powered snow blowers, etc. in conjunction with the operation of plow vehicles to remove snow from park areas as needed.

Performs other related work as required.

Operates equipment in appropriate manner. Determines best way to accomplish assigned tasks. Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair work to equipment. Performs safety checks on equipment prior to operation and determines if equipment is operationally sound. Performs tasks with a minimum of supervision. Special assignments are explained in detail. Employee is expected to make decisions with regard to procedures, polices, and regulations. Work is reviewed by supervisor for quality.
