Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Employee is assigned to Maintenance Trades section of Facility Services Department of Clarks Summit State Hospital and functions under direct supervision of Facility Operations Supervisor. This employee has responsibility for performing skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade, which guarantees maintenance and repair of such items as doors, windows, locks, furniture, etc. These efforts ensure a safe and secure environment for patients and staff. This position is an essential employee. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. This is skilled work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings throughout the facility. Work involves exercising independent judgment in determining materials and work methods to be used. Performs skilled carpentry work removing damaged materials or performing full demolition of existing structures; cleaning and preparing work areas and sub-surfaces for reconstruction. Construct and install materials and products according to dimensional requirements and specifications. Work includes reading blueprints and drawings; creating preliminary work sketches; laying out work and selecting tools and materials for similar assignments. Work is performed independently and checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Repair roofs, flashing, insulation, overhead doors, windows, bed rails, chairs, rockers, wheelchairs, tables, desks, nightstands, lockers, and wardrobes. Repair and install doors, related hardware, screens, drapery rods, toilet partitions, handrails, signs, insulation, etc. Construct scaffolding, cabinets, shelving, bookcases, walls, etc.; form, pour and finish concrete, repair and install brick work. Paint and refinish furniture; paint/stain building exterior and interior walls, ceilings, floors, etc.; apply wallpaper to wall surfaces. Prepare surfaces to be painted, apply surfacing when required. Mix and match paint and stains using proper proportions of pigment, base and thinner. Estimate and requisition materials. Transport materials and equipment to job site(s). Cut glass and use such power tools as circular saws, sabre saws, table saws, routers, band saws, electric drills and hammers, grinders, belt sanders, planers, and jointers, as well as all hand tools normally used by this trade (hammers, chisels, rulers, wrenches, brushes, scrapers, trowels, etc.). Completely remodel walls, ceilings, and floors in new and existing buildings. Document all required forms, including Maintenance Work Orders, requisitions, etc., completing accurately and in a timely manner. May have to work in inclement weather situations to complete assignments. All work is completed in a neat and professional manner, using proper tools and materials for each assignment. During the course of work, all necessary safety precautions are observed to protect patients, staff, and visitors. All work areas are cleaned, with materials stacked and secured at the end of the day and returned to original condition upon completion of assignment. Report any problems or deficiencies in the physical plant or equipment to immediate supervisor. Perform related work as required. Employee will perform all items listed on PMs generated that fall within duties and essential functions of job classification. Essential Functions: Use various rulers, level and fit moldings, mark and cut lines; repair walls and ceilings, interior and exterior of buildings; climb on equipment as necessary to make repairs; move from building to building, transporting materials and supplies. Pick up supplies: wood, materials, etc.; apply building products to floors, ceilings, walls, etc.; pick up scraps after completing jobs; use power tools and shop machinery. Move materials from storage areas to shop and work areas; load and unload vehicles; receive verbal instructions; receive information via telephone, radio, pagers, or public address system. Comprehend written communications, policies and procedures, memos, etc; communicate by telephone; give verbal information on job progress to supervisor; sign various forms, requisitions, etc.; complete reports and necessary forms. Work beyond normal shift as emergencies arise; be available to accept calls on weekends and after normal work hours. Use proper power and hand tools and equipment. Operates state vehicles in a safe manner, supporting work performed as per Management Directive 615.16. Performs lead work over helpers performing basic assignments. Ability to lead a small group of semi-skilled workers. |
