Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. This position is responsible for supporting the District’s maintenance operations to extend the useful service life of bridges & structures under management by performing various skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in the repair and maintenance of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, roadway structures, facilities and buildings. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Performs a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of structures, bridges, equipment, and machinery in order to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Work assignments require journeyman level of knowledge and proficiency in the trades of carpentry, welding, masonry, electrical, and plumbing. During the winter season, performs a variety of tasks in support of the county's winter operations. Tasks may include, but are not limited to - the maintenance of structures, bridges, equipment, and machinery in order to ensure the safety of the traveling public. In order to maintain and extend the useful life of structures, the incumbent performs a variety of tasks related to, but not limited to; construct concrete formwork, place and finish concrete, install environmental controls, construct of temporary shoring, weld metal support structures and replacement parts, and/or paint surfaces as determined by their supervisor. Maintains/repairs/replaces structures, bridges, culverts, retaining walls, facilities, buildings and grounds, and other roadway structures using a journey level of proficiency in several trades. Operates a variety of construction equipment in the performance of duties such as arc welders, mig welders, pipe threaders, concrete saws, chain saws, air compressors, hammer drills, jackhammers, chipping hammers, de-scaler, generators, pumps, carpentry tools, power tools, forklifts, personal lifting devices, bucket trucks, and a wide variety of hand tools and other power and pneumatic tools. Performs a variety of maintenance work associated with maintaining, repairing, and remodeling of the District’s office facilities. Performs minor mechanical repairs and maintenance to equipment in the field and in the county maintenance shed to ensure the equipment is functional and can be operated safely as intended. Assists in performing welding repairs to construction equipment and snowplows. Performs and documents pre-operation and post-operation checks, material usage, and makes necessary field adjustments to permit safe operation and minimize wear of equipment and tools. Exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures for assigned tasks. Receives assignments orally or through written instructions, which may be accompanied by plans, sketches or diagrams. Adheres to the Department, District, and County policies related to time/leave management. Follow proper call-off procedures. Schedules non-emergency absences in advance. Observes start/stop times, breaks, and meal times. Works efficiently and effectively alone and with others, is available for overtime and emergency responses. Properly completes work in accordance with issued work order from supervisor. Provides assistance to County Maintenance Staff related to winter operations as required or determined by management. ENVIRONMENTAL Implements the environmental protection requirements of maintenance work activities performed. Also fulfills the environmental management requirements designated for this title in environmental training programs. Recognizing that everyone is involved in the District's and County's actions to demonstrate sound environmental practices, employee fulfills the Maintenance Unit Business Plan objectives related to the Strategic Environmental Management Program (SEMP). Also, supports the efforts of managers, supervisors, and other employees to meet these objectives. Performs other related duties as required. Safety: 1. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. 5. Evaluate contractor operations: • Immediately stop unsafe actions • Engage in ongoing safety dialogue with the contractor’s leadership 6. Promote a CULTURE that emphasizes SAFETY as a core value: • Immediately stop any unsafe actions. • Incorporate safety into all discussions, deliberations, and decisions. • Continuously communicate the safety direction. • Inspire employees to be a MODEL for safety. • Encourage and support safety initiatives and programs by participating and involving staff. • Recognize safety daily. • Acknowledge EXTRAORDINARY achievements. • Learn and improve through After Action Reviews (AAR’s) • Enforce accountability. Succession Planning: Employees: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Department Green Plan Policy: Commit to following the Departments Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principals. Failure to comply with Department Green Plan Policy shall be documented in employee’s performance review. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): For Rank and File employees: Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0 hour day. |
