Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of varsity, intramural and recreational sports and less athletic activities to provide opportunities for recreation, physical development, athletic competition and other activities for the maximum number of inmates possible. Supervision of inmates and coaching are included. Periodic surveys of interest will be completed. Both outdoor activity and inclement weather alternatives must be provided. Manage all arrangements for organized athletic competition including recruitment and selection of teams, physical exams where needed, assignments of coaches and trainers, practice schedules, uniforms and equipment, schedule officials, admission of outside teams, transportation, meals and other logistics as needed. Manage the inventory, maintenance, and safe storage of athletic and recreational equipment. Identify needs and plan acquisition of equipment through purchases, etc. Supervise and monitor the Music program and ensure inventory is accurately monitored. 1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Manage leisure time activities and programs for inmates through subordinate staff 3. Supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate staff 4. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 5. Review, analyze, and interpret information 6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 7. Operate basic office equipment 8. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 9. Visually observe inmates’ activities 10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 11. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 12. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 13. Work overtime as required 14. Travel as required |
Decision Making: Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. Work is assigned and reviewed through at least weekly contact, formal meetings, review of projects, etc. Standards and objectives are set and performance evaluated via EPRs. Activities Specialists are supervised on a day to day basis through personal contact. Assignments are made to specific reports, activities, and logistic functions such as equipment maintenance, etc. Specialists and manager will be responsible for their supervision. The Activities Manager is supervised by the Corrections Classification and Program Manager via meetings and review of activities and functions held. Individual meetings and discussions are held to review programming and procedures. |
