Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Updated 3/31/2026 The Clarks Summit State Hospital Boiler Plant consists of 3 high pressure steam boilers and auxiliary equipment maintained for supplying steam heat and hot water to the facility. Position responsible to operate and maintain boilers and auxiliary equipment to maintain proper steam pressure and water levels in a generating plant. Work involves keeping records of steam production and fuel consumption; making minor adjustments and repairs to boilers and equipment; monitoring boiler plant systems and reporting potential problems; and operating small steam engines of low horsepower used to drive fans and related equipment in a boiler plant. Work other shifts as needed. Read gauges on control panels and water level indicators for boilers. Conduct inspections; conduct water tests; fill water softeners with salt; place chemicals in boiler plant water treatment tanks; move boiler valves for replacement and/or repairs. Perceive boiler’s low water alarm and respond accordingly; detect abnormalities in running motors and other operating equipment. Make minor repairs on plant equipment; lubricate equipment; take water samples; record water data test information in boiler room logs; record oil and gas data, steam use, and steam pressure. Complete preventative maintenance at the Boiler plant and steam utility tunnels. Maintain boilers, auxiliary equipment and building, including cleaning and painting. Receive instructions/information via telephone, pagers, cellular phone, computer, and public address systems; comprehend written communications, policies and procedures, memos, manuals, product safety data sheets, equipment operating instructions, boiler room charts for steam production and water flow, and boiler room logs. May need to cover work hours outside of regular scheduled hours to manage coverage. Based on power plant and operational needs of maintenance area: may perform other duties to include but not limited to, grounds keeping activities, maintain clean grounds area picking up trash, cleaning leaves, etc.; operate mechanized and motorized grounds keeping equipment. Assist tradesmen in building wooden structures, moving furniture, use power tools; operate a light truck to transport personnel and materials to and from field locations. Assist with maintenance and repairs at water treatment plant. General maintenance of buildings such as painting, cleaning, plumbing fixtures, etc. Augment transportation staff as needed, through the operation of general-purpose vehicles. Perform other duties as assigned. |
