Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position supervises and instructs inmates in a structured classroom and on the job training program in the plumbing trades at SCI Dallas. This work is performed to ensure the efficient operation of the facility and provide vocational training to inmates.

Description of Duties:

70% Provides classroom and on-the-job training and instruction to inmates, which includes the standard practices, methods, and procedures of the plumbing trade involving plumbing systems, distribution systems for hot and cold water, drainage systems, heating systems, fire sprinkler systems, and building plumbing. Conducts classroom training through the delivery of an appropriate curriculum of the trade. Maintains order and discipline of inmates during work assignments and classroom instruction. Maintains documentation of all inmate training progress, attendance, and assignment details. Oversees and directs inmate work crews in completing plumbing work orders as part of the on-the-job training provided. Plans and assigns daily inmate schedules and inspects completed work assignments.

10% Issues and inventories all materials and tools used during the classroom training and while completing on-the-job work assignments. Conducts searches to ensure that all materials and tools are accounted for.

10% Determines materials and tools needed to complete plumbing work assignments. Submits purchase requests for materials and tools as necessary.

10% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise care, custody and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Demonstrate standard principles and practices of the plumbing trade
4. Supervise and instruct inmates in the principles and practices of the plumbing
trade
5. Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints
6. Use and instruct inmates in the use of chemicals
7. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb and grasp
8. Walk over all types of physical surfaces
9. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
10. Work overtime, all work shifts, and all posts as required by operational
necessities and emergencies. Must be able to work mandatory overtime in
compliance with overtime provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with
little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
11. Perform basic mathematical calculations
12. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in masonry trade work
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform (hat, shirt, trousers, etc.)
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden
quiet)
16. Visually observe inmates’ activities
17. Analyze and react to situations and problems, and provide appropriate solutions
18. Search inmates for contraband
19. Administer emergency medical assistance to both inmates and staff
20. Receive, issue, and control inventory
21. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing



Decision Making:

Independently assigns, schedules, prioritizes, and documents inmate tasks for typical plumbing work orders.

Exercises technical independence in determining and ordering the tools, materials, and supplies needed to complete work orders.

Determines appropriate instruction methods based upon project needs and inmate ability.

Maintenance Manager coordinates any special assignments.
