Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position supervises and instructs inmates in a structured classroom and on-the-job training program in the refrigeration mechanic trade at SCI Rockview. This work is performed to ensure the efficient operation of the facility and provide vocational training to inmates.

Description of Duties:

70% Provides classroom and on-the-job training and instruction to inmates, which includes the standard practices, methods, and procedures of the refrigeration mechanic trade involving the installation, repair, inspection, and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment. Conducts classroom training through delivery of an appropriate curriculum of the trade. Maintains order and discipline of inmates during work assignments and classroom instruction. Maintains documentation of all inmate training progress, attendance, and assignment details. Oversees and directs inmate work crews in completing refrigeration work orders as part of the on-the-job training provided. Plans and assigns daily inmate schedules and inspects completed work assignments.

10% Issues and inventories all materials and tools used during classroom training and while completing on the job work assignments. Conducts searches to ensure that all materials and tools are accounted for.

10% Determines materials and tools needed to complete refrigeration mechanic work assignments. Submits purchase requests for materials and tools as necessary.

10% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the refrigeration mechanic trade
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions
7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the refrigeration mechanic trade
12. Operate basic office equipment
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Visually observe inmates’ activities
18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
20. Travel as required

Independently assigns, schedules, prioritizes, and documents inmate tasks for typical refrigeration mechanic work orders.

Exercises technical independence in determining and ordering the tools, materials, and supplies needed to complete work orders.

Determines appropriate instruction methods based upon project needs and inmate ability.

Maintenance Manager coordinates any special assignments.
