Position Purpose:

The purpose of a Park Ranger 1 at the Laurel Hill State Park Complex is to provide good customer service, engage in positive visitor interactions, and portray that first impression of the park to the public in accordance with the Bureau of State Parks’ outlined policies, procedures, and management directives to ensure a safe and enjoyable park visit.

Provides information, rules, and regulations to park visitors; ensuring posters, bulletin boards and signs are current and serviceable; directs park visitors away from hazardous and unsafe conditions and/or situations; assists environmental education staff with programming; educates patrons on use of park resources and facilities in designated area, including guided trail hikes, park history, water recreation activities, beach and bathing areas, and environmental features; inspects buildings, structures, facilities, and park grounds for security and safety; reports rule and regulation violations to appropriate personnel; ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and safe condition performing related maintenance and custodial duties where appropriate; maintains and monitors public-accessible beach rescue equipment and public safety first aid kits; responding to emergency situations, such as water and automobile accidents to ensure visitor safety; in cases of emergency makes appropriate notification to emergency personnel; administers first-aid and/or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as necessary to injured park visitors; assists in search and rescue operations within State Park grounds and boundaries; areas of responsibility are throughout Laurel Hill State Park Complex boundaries and include all park facilities, campground and day use areas, roads, trails, and lakes, including beach and bathing areas. This may require the position operates a (motor vehicle, ATV, bicycle, or boat) to monitor park grounds at Laurel Hill State Park Complex.

Description of Duties:

Present a professional park employee image to the general public through uniform appearance and dress; verbal skills and courtesies; knowledge of the parks and their environment and history; rules, regulations; telephone skills; maintain a self-presence of confidence in-order to promote a proper and quality experience for the visiting public.

Ensures visitor safety, provides patrons with information and educates the public about park rules and regulations, and protects park resources.

Assess visitor injuries to determine the appropriate aid to be rendered, such as First Aid, CPR and notify 911.

Inspects all postings, bulletin boards, brochure racks, hospital directions to ensure all content is correct and current and in ample supply.

Maintains and inspects assigned equipment and ensures work stations are in a clean and safe condition.

Performs daily beach safety inspection check list to ensure open swim/swim at your own risk policy and procedures are followed.

Maintains beach public first aid kits and safety rescue stations located on the beach.

Assists with Organized Group Camp check outs. Ability to identify building damages and report them.

Assists with park maintenance as needed.

Maintain hiking trail system blazes, snowmobile blazes, cross country blazes, hunting area signage and park boundaries.

Ability to operate park vehicles, bicycle, motor boat, ATV and snowmobile as assigned in the performance of duties.

Ability to use the Park Revenue Collection system to print permits, register campers, change reservations, issue launch permits, rent pavilions, cabins, cottages, walled tent, campsites, and shelter areas and collect fees.

Educates park patrons on use of park resources and facilities in designated area, including guided trail hikes, park history, water recreation activities, beach and bathing areas, and environmental features.

Assist Environmental Education Staff to conduct programming in the park complex.

Answers the public’s questions regarding park facilities and resources, recreational schedules, history and environmental features.

Explains park rules, regulations, policies, procedures, goals and
Objectives to the public.

Ability to learn State Park rules, regulations, policies, procedures, goals, and objectives governing outdoor recreation.

Ability to meet with park visitors to explain park rules, regulations, policies, procedures, goals, and objectives; and to answer questions regarding park facilities, recreational schedules, history and environmental features.

Ability to react quickly and calmly during emergency situations and report them to DCNR Rangers or Park Managers.

Assist DCNR Rangers and Park Managers in search and rescue operations within DCNR owned lands.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and the public.

This work involves a great deal of public contact. Work involves monitoring park grounds and boundaries to assure compliance with park rules and regulations. Provide information to Ranger Supervisor, DCNR Rangers, and Park Managers where citations must be issued and criminal action taken. Perform routine maintenance task: lock & secure gates and buildings, pick up litter and make note of unsafe areas or structures. Perform public contact work and inform the visiting public on proper use of the area, issue camping and cabin permits. Inspect area and facilities for safety hazards.

Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Park Management.

This position requires you to make daily decisions concerning customer complaints and service requests. Emergency situations require your immediate response as to providing medical treatment or requesting additional medical help. Enforcement actions require you to contact a State Park Officer. Search and rescue responses require immediate decisions based on the situation at hand.
