Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position is part of the law enforcement, visitor service, and public contact staff of French Creek Complex, headquartered at French Creek State Park with a starting location determined by the chief ranger. The DCNR Ranger is charged with law enforcement, investigation, and powers of arrest.

If this position is filled as a DCNR Ranger Trainee, the incumbent will participate in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a DCNR Ranger. If the position is filled as a DCNR Ranger, the employee will be responsible for service as a visitor service, safety, and law enforcement officer for the Bureau of State Parks.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Patrols state park grounds, waters and boundaries by vehicle, boat, or foot to protect park visitors, park facilities, and resources. Must be commissioned as a State Park Officer. Work involves ensuring compliance with park rules and regulations; enforcing park rules and regulations, and the Commonwealth’s Criminal Code and Vehicle Code; enforcing Fish and Boat Commission and Game Commission regulations or providing information to them on violations occurring on park property. Deals fairly and consistently with park visitors in all public contact situations. Coordinates with other enforcement agencies on matters affecting the park.

Must maintain certifications in firearms, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) pepper spray, baton, first aid, CPR and others as required by the Bureau and park.

Administers legal actions in magistrate court by filing citations for violations of State Recreation Areas Rules and Regulations and by representing the Commonwealth in subsequent hearings when they are requested.

Provides information to park visitors concerning park history, park facilities, recreation opportunities, local attractions, etc. Answers the telephone, collects fees and does other administrative tasks as needed. Completes daily and monthly reports, attendance and incident reports accurately and on a timely basis.

Checks and secures all park facilities. Investigates all incidents of theft, vandalism, trespass, or fire, and takes appropriate action. Opens and closes park gates according to operating schedules.

Directs traffic during routine operations and emergency situations. Maintains all safety and rescue equipment. Performs search and rescue activities.

Participates in special Bureau enforcement actions as approved by managers.

Must be able to work weekends, holidays and varying shifts.

Work is reviewed by briefings with my supervisor, visits to sites and review of completed tasks.

-Trainee – If this position is filled as a Trainee, the incumbent will participate in a one-year forma and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a DCNR Ranger. Assignments are designed to develop the employee’s technical proficiency through a formal training plan. In accordance with the training plan, work assignments increase in scope and complexity as the employee gains technical proficiency in the work. Once the employee demonstrates the ability to perform the work, specific assignments are given, and the employee performs the work under the technical guidance of the supervisor. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for personal development, completeness, technical accuracy, and quality.
