Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This person is responsible for: assisting park visitors; improving compliance with the rules and regulations utilizing many methods including education, explanation, and enforcement; completing building and grounds patrols; assure the safety of park visitors, park environment, and park facilities; conducts search and rescue operations as a first responder; makes physical arrests and serves warrants as necessary. Takes appropriate action to resolve routine and emergency situations.

The DCNR Ranger must keep abreast of all events and activities in the park complex and keep the Ranger Supervisor, Managers, Maintenance Supervisor, office staff, and others informed of situations, needs and problems. This employee must be able to perform emergency maintenance and take appropriate action to resolve emergency situations.

If this position is filled as a DCNR Ranger Trainee, the incumbent will participate in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a DCNR Ranger.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Work involves participating in formal, informal, and on the job training to develop the necessary skills and techniques in the areas of public contact and service, conservation principles, environmental education, public safety, and law enforcement to perform the work of a DCNR Ranger. Work involves participating in formal classroom instruction for effective customer service practices, current conservation and outdoor recreation practices, and basic techniques and theory of environmental education; participating in formal classroom and physical training required to obtain authority to exercise the power of arrest; and participating in field assignments in adherence to agency policies and regulations. Work also involves accompanying supervisors and other rangers on patrol; assisting in providing visitor and law enforcement services; and assisting in preparing written reports. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for compliance with departmental practices, policies, and procedures. Work schedule involves working weekends and holidays and operational needs and functions.

Operates motorized vehicles, both two and four wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, and watercraft, non- motorized equipment, bicycle and foot patrols in various types of park and forest terrain in all types of weather. Conducts inspections of buildings, structures and facilities for security and safety. Ensures postings on bulletin boards and signs are current and serviceable. Ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and neat condition. This includes the required uniform.

Presents a professional Park Ranger image to the general public through uniform appearance, verbal skills, courtesies, and knowledge of the park, the environment and history, rules, regulations and laws, telephone skills and a presence of self-confidence. Provides information and assistance to park visitors. Staffs park offices and visitor centers. Registers park visitors using PRRS. Works with volunteers.

Participates in a structured law enforcement training program to obtain authority to exercise the power of arrest, especially as it pertains to State Parks and Forests. As a trainee by accompanying supervisor or other DCNR Ranger observe and assist as directed with complaints, accidents and crimes. Maintains miscellaneous logs as directed including lost and found articles. Maintains radio equipment, vehicle inventory and repairs.

Responds as directed to emergencies, communicates effectively verbally by two-way radio and in writing. Performs search and rescue consistent with training. Provides first aid and CPR consistent with current certifications. Directs traffic.

Completes monthly and daily logs including the status and condition of facilities, equipment and visitor safety.

Informs supervisor, other DCNR Rangers and management of incidents and situations in the park and responds as directed to any situation which may arise, including safety issues, park visitors that require assistance and emergencies. Determines course of action to take to resolve issue and follows through.
