Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Primarily responsible for providing general medical care for all residents on assigned living areas and wherever needed to provide coverage and continuity of care during physician absences and on call for nights, holidays and weekends while assuring resident's safety.

Planned working time percentages are approximate and can change on a daily basis due to operational needs.

60%
• Provides general medical care to residents on assigned wards and wherever else needed; i.e. residents assigned to alternate and other staff physicians during their absence.

• Acts as an Interdisciplinary Team member; affords leadership and make significant contribution to development and execution of the resident’s entire care plan. Confers with residents, other physicians, the courts and other interested agencies regarding condition, welfare and progress of the residents.

• Is responsible for performing comprehensive assessments and physical examinations, ordering and interpreting laboratory and other studies needed to arrive at accurate diagnoses, and instituting appropriate therapeutic measures.


20%
• Comprehensively and accurately documents all clinical decisions and actions pertaining to care of each resident, and bill Medicare appropriately when resident is seen. Writes progress notes using the “SOAP” format.

• Writes orders for medications and treatments clearly. Provide diagnoses for each medication ordered.

• Dictates necessary reports, consults in a clear, organized fashion.

• Signs, dates and addresses issues raised by labs, other diagnostic studies and consults; reviews drug regimens promptly.

• Is competent in pharmacology and psychopharmacologic treatment. Utilizes in-house and outside consultants, and refers to general hospitals appropriately.

• Communicates effectively with residents and their families and staff members.

• Act as a consultant to other physicians when asked.

• Prioritizes work with input from nursing staff, so that critical care issues are handled promptly.

• Reviews and addresses issues raised on the daily 24 hour report promptly.

• Is responsible for timely and thorough completion of 30/60-day medication reviews, admission and annual assessments.

• Follows the most current nursing home guidelines for these assessments.

• Is responsible for completion of the physician portion of the MDS in accordance with ward weekly schedule.

• Completes incident reports within two business days. Addresses ways of preventing recurrences. Evaluates residents when incident suggests the need.

• Arranges for residents on psychotropic medications to be seen at least annually by the Psychiatrist.

• Keeps current with and practices according to Federal, JCAHO and State regulations and SMRC policies and procedures.

• Maintains high level skills through individual study, continuing education, conferences and consultation with specialists and other colleagues. Meets the annual requirements for CME credits (50 credits/year).

• Attends all mandatory staff training meetings.

• Serves on various assigned committees and attends at least 60% of the meetings held.

• Attends and participates in Medical Staff meetings and Post Mortem Committee meeting.

• Participates in on-call schedule for nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Provides employee health physicals as directed.

• Provides life sustaining emergency services to staff, visitors and vendors as needed.

• Provides general medical services to the South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit inmates. Also provide employee health physicals for new hires of the South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit.

• Other related duties as needed and/or assigned.

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Staff physicians make most medical treatment decisions for individual residents. They do so by involving the resident, their family and the Treatment Team members in the discussion of the issues involved in the decision. When a resident is not competent to make health care decisions, and a consensus is cannot be reached on the optimal treatment plan, the issue is referred to the physician's supervisor. Issues which involve staff from other departments are also referred to the supervisor.
