Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Primarily responsible for care and treatment of all physically ill patients and related medical functions of assigned units ensuring patient safety at all times.

Expected to use best practices, and evidence based on guidelines when choosing appropriate treatments and preventive interventions for all patients.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs admission physical and neurological exam and medical/surgical history on all new admissions whin 24 hours of admission, reviews all records from community hospitals and previous hospitalizations, formulates medical diagnosis, treatment goals and plans of all individual patients.

Provides annual physical and neurological examinations and summary of previous year’s medical illnesses and treatment for all patients in assigned areas within the published timeframe that allows evaluation to be complete before the annual ITP.

Renders medical treatment to all patients in assigned areas on a daily basis by making daily unit rounds, ordering labs, x-rays and other diagnostic studies and consultations as necessary. Reviews results of studies, reports, consultations and follow-up care where indicated.

Identifies patient’s medical treatment needs and facilitates patient’s transfer to community hospital for emergency or non-emergency medical treatment. Maintains regular communication with the community hospital physicians while patient is receiving treatment there. Provides supervisor and treatment team with regular updates on patient’s medical condition.

Ensures the unit attending psychiatrist and Treatment Team are aware of patients with medical illnesses and current treatment orders. Collaborates with the treatment team to develop appropriate entries in the ITP that articulate medical problems and goals which have been impacted by the patient’s mental illness, are interfering with recovery or discharge plans, or are serious compliance issues. Attends annual and admission ITP meetings.

Develops medial goals/recommendations and plans to treat patients’ physical problem and updates stable medical problem list. Ensures documentation of all problems and response to treatment is entered in the medical record.

Attends assigned medical staff and hospital committee meetings and participates in committee work as assigned. For medical emergencies, announces the medical emergency and initiates appropriate medical actions/interventions. Following the emergency, takes appropriate action according to WeSH Policies and Procedures.

For disaster/emergencies, e.g., fires, earthquakes, floods, hazardous material incidents, utility interruptions or transportation accidents, follows basic emergency procedures as contained in Wernersville emergency Plan.

Provides employee physicals to new employees and other specified employees as directed.

Completes Medicare billing forms as appropriate for all treatment interventions including Medicare Part B eligible patients, with accompanying chart entries that have all elements required: 1) patient seen: 2) patient symptoms and/or physical; 3) diagnosis.

Participates in Department PI Plan by performing assigned audits.

Confers with staff members, relatives, agencies, attorneys, courts, or others invested in the care, treatment and prognosis of the patient, by reviewing their conditions in a manner consistent with the hospital’s confidentiality requirements. This will allow the hospital to maintain good working relationships with the parties important and influential in the patient’s welfare.

Participate in assigned committees and meetings by offering medical expertise as your experience dictates to ensure high standards.

Responsible for additional coverage of ward areas during vacations, holidays, emergencies, or when specifically assigned by the supervisor.

Participates in patient programming as assigned to assist in patient education and wellness promotion.

Available for night and weekend coverage when assigned by complying with the on-duty policy in order to ensure continuity of patient care after regular working hours.

Responds to medical emergencies within 10 minutes, announces the medical emergency and initiates appropriate medical actions/interventions using the guidelines established in hospital policy to assure continuity of care. Assumes a leadership role to provide direction and management expertise to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT)

Act as consultant to other hospitals when assigned to ensure good medical practices and unbiased opinions throughout the state system.

Conduct patient clinics in areas consistent with medical expertise and privileging when assigned, in order to assure convenient, cost effective, and high quality medical services.

Responsible for annual physical assessments, new employee physical, interim medical evaluation when necessary, and occupational assessments in order to comply with DHS and OSHA standards.

Participating member of the Medical Staff by attending meetings and contributing to discussions in order to ensure a vital, effective and influential Medical Staff body.

Perform other related duties as assigned such as, interim work-duty assignments, reassignments and special projects. The purpose and standards will be provided at the time of assignment.

Maintain timely communications with other staff in order to keep abreast of clinical and non-clinical issues via e-mail and interoffice communications.

As a treatment team member, assures comprehensive medical treatment and psychiatric stability of the patients assigned to the team by:

- Collaborating with the team leader and sharing joint supervision of special treatment procedures consistent with WeSH, State, and Federal regulations
- Maintain knowledgeable regarding the comprehensive treatment of patients
- Become familiar with treatment team functioning
- Understanding hospital policies and practices
- Practicing medicine consistent with best practice community standards
- Assuring the appropriateness of clinical diagnosis, adequacy of treatment, coordination and continuity of care, and appropriate consultation with specialist.
- Providing medical leadership to team members in addressing risk/benefit treatment issues and recent clinical research data appropriate to patient care being delivered
- Assuming a leadership role in developing a comprehensive treatment formulation and developing an integrated treatment plan to accomplish the goals intended.

Is responsible for the medical care of all patients in assigned units and consults with supervisor for complex medical and ethical issues. Informs supervisor of all significant refusals of care when they have not been resolved at the treatment team level per hospital policy.

Essential Functions

 1. Perform comprehensive admission and annual physical examination, neurological examination and medical history of all patients at WeSH
