Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Performs public safety work patrolling, observing, directing, and monitoring the swimming pool at Little Buffalo State Park to maintain order and to ensure visitor safety.

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Patrols, observes, directs, and monitors activities in the Little Buffalo State Park Pool Complex from stations on shore or from stations on/in the water to maintain order and to minimize the threat to swimmers and other park patrons from accidents or drowning.

Recognizes when swimmers are in distress or need assistance and rescues them using accepted lifesaving techniques.

Remains alert at all times at assigned post. Scans the swimming area to prevent accidents and be prepared to respond to visitors in the event of an emergency.

Reports all rescues, accidents or incidents to the supervisor immediately and summons help as deemed necessary. Administrative duty of incident report completion is done promptly, thoroughly and legibly upon completion of event.

Administers first aid, artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including adult, infant, and child CPR, to injured park visitors.

Ensures compliance with the Bureau of State Parks' swimming rules and regulations following prescribed guidelines and procedures. Provides assistance to park patrons and explains park rules and regulations.

Inspects the condition of buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition.

Inspects swimming areas by checking for unsafe conditions to ensure they are safe for public use.

Prepares and submits written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents. Completes necessary forms and ensures that they are turned into the lifeguard supervisor or park manager. Forms include daily log, first aid log, pool inspection sheet, water quality forms and any other as directed by the supervisor. Administrative duty of report completion is done promptly, thoroughly and legibly.

Retain a detailed knowledge of the DCNR Lifeguard Manual and has a thorough knowledge of its contents.

Participates in orientation and training sessions for Lifeguards to review and/or learn the Bureau of State Parks policy and procedures, learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates.

Participates in the operation of a swimming pool by taking water samples, reading meters and recording information, reporting the need for chemicals and adjustments, and reporting malfunctions or breakdowns to superiors.

Performs basic maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use. Daily work may include, but not limited to litter pickup around pool and bathhouses, cleaning/inspecting bathhouses and vacuuming/scrubbing pool. Maintain the lifeguard station and ticket booth to ensure it is organized and clean at all times. Maintain lifeguard and ticket booth equipment to ensure it is in working condition.

Operate base and portable radios using established radio procedures.

The employee continuously monitors the swimming area, determines when swimmers are in distress and need assistance, and takes necessary action to assist. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and addresses the issue as necessary.

Essential Functions
