Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Assist the Forest Maintenance Supervisors, Forest Assistant Managers, and/or Forest District Manager with the maintenance, forest fire, recreational, and management activities of the district. As needed, assistance may require temporary assignment to other district maintenance divisions. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Maintains State Forest facilities, equipment, and tools; operates specialized equipment, tools, and/or vehicles; performs manual work when not operating assigned equipment; acts as a lead worker, when assigned, to other staff in the performance of their duties; and performs other State Forest operations as assigned. 1. State Forest Facilities Maintenance: Cleans, maintains, paints, and repairs State Forest facilities including buildings, structures, boundaries, trails, equipment, tools, etc. Operates and maintains necessary tools and equipment needed to accomplish the required maintenance. Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment and tools and assists automotive mechanic when assigned. Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment and tools prior to operation. 2. Road Maintenance: Operates assigned equipment and tools to maintain a smooth, properly drained road surface and clear and safe right-of-way. 3. Other State Forest Operations: Assist in accordance with the requirements of this position with other operations such as snow removal, facility security and protection, and the delivery of supplies and equipment. Responds to emergencies on and off State Forest Lands: In coordination with other emergency responders and in accordance with individual's qualifications, this position is responsible for responding to emergencies as assigned, both on and off State Forest Lands. 1. Search and Rescue Activities: Assist in conducting search and rescue operations on DCNR lands in accordance with current DCNR Search & Rescue Policy. 2. Wildfire Activities: Assist in the prevention, control, and suppression of wildfires. a. Complete all required trainings to for employees assigned to Fireline positions as specified by the Bureau of Forestry Training Manual. b. Responds to fire calls as needed. c. Acts as assigned in fire suppression situations. (See Wildfire Resource Plan.) d. Assists as needed in Fire Prevention Programming. e. Leads fire crews, as assigned, and qualified. f. Assists in the implementation of controlled burns for the purpose of fuel reduction and forest and wildlife management. g. Serves as a lookout in assigned fire tower in times of high fire danger or emergencies. h. Assists with maintenance and operation of equipment and tools used in controlling forest fires. Miscellaneous: To accomplish the requirements of this position, the following item apply. 1. Attend as assigned meetings, trainings, and workshops conducted for the benefit of bureau employees. 2. Keep updated on new district and bureau policies and procedures as identified by the Forest Maintenance Supervisor, Forest Assistant Manager, and Forest District Manager. 3. Assist other bureau employees in the accomplishment of assigned projects necessary for the maintenance and safety of State Forest operations (e.g. surveying, gate installation, carpentry, building demolition, etc.) 4. Forest and Habitat Management: Assist with activities such as plantings, seedings, pruning, and cutting, etc. 5. Maintain and provide an active home telephone number. 6. Perform work as required by District Forester. |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis, daily or weekly, by the Forest Assistant Managers, Forest Maintenance Supervisors, and/or Forest District Manager. Employees are to proceed independently or as a work unit, as identified in the instructions. Initiative should be taken by the assigned lead worker to accomplish the project within the assigned timeframe. Project progress shall be reported to the Forest Assistant Managers, Forest Maintenance Supervisors, and/or Forest District Manager, as identified in the instructions. |
