Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position is assigned to the Therapeutic Activities Department at Torrance State Hospital. The primary responsibility of this position is to design, implement, evaluate and conduct therapeutic activities services including vocational adjustment segments to further comprehensive treatment of patients. The employee is responsible for maintaining clinical records and participating in meetings involving clinical issues. Ages of patients served range from 18 years through 90+ (ages will vary according to patient census at any particular time).

Work Effort Statement:
• Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates therapeutic activities/vocational segements of comprehensive individual patient program plans.
• Develops specifically planned therapeutic activities/vocational goals and interventions to implement therapeutic activities/vocational segements of
• comprehensive individuals patient program plans.
• Attends and participates( as scheduled) in multidisciiplinary team meetings, provides recommendations regarding specific therapeutic activities/vocational methods in program plans.
• Screens and prepares referrals to other therapeutic activities or other clinical disciplines.
• Completes individual assessments and required documentation per established guidelines.
• Selects/assigns patients into therapeutic groups/patient worker positions in conjunction with treatment team decision.
• Conducts therapeutic groups/treatment sessions in a variety of program areas such as recreation, vocational,socialization, sensory awareness, leisure activities, community trips, escorting patients, assuming responsibility for their needs and safety,
• recording attendance and patient worker timesheets
• Conducts vocational adjustment sessions at the jamison canteen (food service), greenhouse(horticulture), suit yourself shop (retail) vending & dining areas (enviromental services), library (clerical), token store(retail), and volunteer office (clerical); to include: orentation, job duties instruction, work skills training/coaching, safety practices, soft skills training, coping skills, job search, application & interviewing skills, and community employment services.
• Provides documentation on patients' progress toward established treatment goals per established guidelines.
• Coordinates scheduling of space, equipment and staff for therapeutic activities within assigned areas, integrates scheduling with services provided by other clinical disciplines, maintains work and equipment at optimal conditions, promoting safety/ cleanliness.
• Provides supervision/direction as assigned to therapeutic activities aides, students, volunteers, maintains records, ensures documentation.
• Establishes effective and cooperative working relationships with other staff, maintaining objectivity and diplomacy.
• Participates in in-service and out-service training to keep abreast of theory and methods in the field of therapeutic activities.
• Participates in appropriate clinical administrative committees and conferences.
• Participates in improving organizational performance through monitoring/ evaluating efforts as assigned.
• May conduct inservice training for aides, students, volunteers or other staff.
• Participates as a member of a team conducting/assisting in special building events, evenings, and weekend ground-wide activities as scheduled.
• Performs related duties as required to meet needs of department and hospital in compliance with DPW, Torrance State Hospital and departmental rules, regulations and guidelines.

• Directs the work of therapeutic activities aides, students, volunteers in providing therapeutic activities services/programs.
• Clearly expresses ideas and information, both orally and in writing, or in any other way to perform the essential functions of the job.
• Gathers, analyzes and evaluates information, maintains necessary administrative and clinical records, requisitions supplies/equipment needed for the implementation of therapeutic activities services.
• Interprets and applies manual policies, procedures regulations, understands and interprets oral and written instructions, communicates with hospital staff.
• Designs, conducts and evaluates therapeutic activities segments of individual program plans in accordance with patients’ functional levels, strengths, needs.
• Observes and reports, orally and in writing, or in any other manner, patient behavior, attitude, physical condition, progress toward established treatment goals.
• Trains/supervises a Therapeutic Activities Aide, providing instruction, direction and support in conducting individual and group therapeutic activities, evaluates staff effectiveness.
• Work effectively with patients to fully utilize their potential, assist them in adjusting to their problems, and involve them in therapeutic activities programs.
• Recognizes occupational hazards, follow safety precautions.
• Remains cognizant of issues of confidentiality

Experience:

Serv Safe Certification, experience/training in culinary arts/food service, enviromental services, retail or horticulture.

Essential Functions

 1. Receive and maintain certification in basic crisis intervention techniques, currently MANDT.
