Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Provide technical support and assistance for forestry staff responsible for the sustainability of the forest resources on the Susquehannock State Forest. Technical support and assistance will be provided in a manner consistent with the State Forest Resource Management Plan, Timber Management Operating Manual and applicable laws of the Commonwealth. All activities will comply with the policies and procedures established by the Forest District Manager. The Forest Assistant Manager supervises this position. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. A.A. STATE FOREST MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE: 1) Obtain timber volumes by marking and/or cruising as prescribed by the administering forester. 2) Survey (with GPS Units) and mark timbersale boundaries, competing vegetation treatment areas and planting sites laid out by the administering forester. Be able to download GPS data on to a PC and create map of the surveyed area. 3) Tally timber using a DCNR provided iPhone or iPad and be able to download the data to a PC. 4) Assist foresters in data collection of field data for stand analysis plots, sale layout, etc. 5) May be assigned as a worker for a crew with other Forest Technicians and/or Semi-Skilled Laborers for execution of projects planned by Foresters. This may include the layout and construction of electric and woven wire fencing where protection from deer browsing is necessary, tree planting, timber marking and competing vegetation plots. 6) Assist foresters with duties that may include wildlife habitat management, forest insect and disease management, district oil and gas work, invasive species management, fire management and seed collection. 7) Apply herbicides for vegetation control as directed by the Forester or supervisor. 8) Assist Recreation Forester with duties such as trail maintenance, trail marking, leased camp administration and motorized camp site maintenance. B. FOREST FIRE PROTECTION: 1) Maintain basic PA wildland firefighter qualifications. 2) Assist in forest fire prevention activities, pre-suppression and suppression activities. 3) Opportunity to participate in the BOF out-of-state wildland fire program. C. MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES WILL INCLUDE: 1) Maintain a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver’s license. 2) Be able to travel around the forest district to various work sites. 3) Accomplish special projects such as tree planting, wildlife habitat projects etc. When needed and/or directed. This includes locating and coordinating the use of necessary tools and/or equipment to accomplish the project. 4) Assist in the district’s boundary line maintenance program, minerals and right-of-way programs as assigned. Employees will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by their supervisor. |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. Work is assigned on a priority basis, however, priorities may change, depending upon weather, district workload, time of year, availability of other staff foresters, etc. Generally, State Forest Management and Forest Fire Suppression are priority activities. Review of work is based upon supervisor's on-site inspection of work performed, review of completed State Forest Management work and Fire activities. Review is also based on conflicts and resolution of conflicts that pertain to assigned responsibilities. Unsatisfactory and incomplete performance of assigned duties is discussed as needed and remedial actions recommended and undertaken as needed. |
