Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The professionally trained incumbent in this position is responsible for the management and supervision of Occupational Therapy Services and Certified Peer Specialists Services.

Description of Duties:

The employee participates in the development of policies and procedures regulating the implementation and conduct of Occupational Therapy Services. Independent judgment is required in planning, directing, controlling, and implementing a program suitable to the cognitive, emotional and physical needs of the consumer. Each program component must be organized around the interests and mental abilities of individual consumers and aimed at maintaining and/or restoring functional levels. All rehabilitative service must be in compliance with the requirements of CMS, Medicare and Medical Assistance, as well as the professional standards of Occupational Therapy.

The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age and diagnoses of consumers comprising the hospital population. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth/development over the life span, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify requirements relative to age specific needs and ensure suitable programming/ interventions/services are provided.

Chief Occupational Therapist provides services to vast populations, such as those with intellectual disabilities, dementias, or TBI for whom the Chief Occupational Therapist designs strategies in conjunction with other Occupational Therapist staff to support skill building in rehabilitative, cognitive and social areas.

Identify new technologies, preserve Occupational Therapy equipment and work with other clinicians in support of effective discharge planning is an integral role of the Chief Occupational Therapist.

The employee must be able to work effectively in cross-cultural situations as evidenced by demonstrated ability to value diversity, understand the dynamics of differences, and incorporate knowledge about culture into the adaptation of programming/interventions/ services as appropriate.

Specific Duties Include: Plans, organizes, and directs work within the departments by developing annual department goals and budgets, creating and prioritizing studies/projects and assigning, reviewing and evaluating subordinate work efforts in order to ensure the delivery of consumer services.

Monitors department’s personnel by reviewing job performance, applying corrective discipline, interviewing and hiring selection process in order that the productivity of the work force is efficiently maintained.

Monitors departmental activity by using predetermined criteria/standards in order to assess the effectiveness of service delivery/performance.

Stimulates and facilitates the development of subordinates by counseling, motivating, problem-solving, training, and guiding in order to maximize the productivity and improve the morale of each member of the staff.

Provides subordinates with clear and specific expectations by establishing annual goals, objectives and performance factors in order to enhance the probability of effectiveness.

Integrates and evaluates the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy Services.

Participates with the Chief Social Rehabilitation Services Executive, other SRS management staff and the management of other clinical services in the development of policies and procedures governing the administration of Occupational Therapy Services within the hospital.

Coordinates the departmental missions or goals, operations, and personnel of two or more component departments to provide a more appropriate and efficient service design to meet new and emerging consumer's needs.

Supervises professional/nonprofessional staff in Occupational Therapy.
Provides consultation on a facility-wide basis to other disciplines, as needed, in order to coordinate and improve consumer's services.

Serves as an Administrative Abuse Investigator.

Essential Functions:
Applies theories, practices and current developments in the field of Occupational Therapy for consumers as applied to the treatment for consumers with mental illness.

Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates a wide variety occupational therapy techniques and gives overall direction to supervisory professional personnel.

Surveys consumers' treatment/habilitation needs, utilizes clinical/program data in planning/evaluating therapeutic activities services and implements improvements as indicated.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those receiving program services as well as with professional colleagues and the general public.

Analyzes, interprets/evaluates rules,regulations/standards and develops sound policies/procedures based on logical professional/administrative perspectives.

Communicates clearly in writing and orally to perform the essential job functions.

Travels as needed to fulfill the job duties and responsibilities of the Chief Occupational Therapist and in the absence of subordinates as required.


Decision Making:

Determines departmental goals and plans.
Prioritizes the utilization of staff resources.
Reviews and approves overtime requests.
Assigns & approves staff training.
Assigns Occupational Therapy staff to effectively address needs of consumers in conjunction with other clinical departments.
Establishes departmental budgetary priorities and approves special need purchases.

Essential Functions

 2. Insures adequate staff coverage and insures timely process of referrals
 3. Evaluates staff performance/competency. Assigns work to subordinate staff
 4. Maintains records, reports, etc
 5. Provides coverage for the OT Department
 6. Conducts/arranges trainings
 7. Complies with regulatory requirements
 8. Read, write and communication orally in English
 9. Work overtime as required; subject to emergency call in.
 10. Obtains and maintains Crisis Intervention and CPR certification, and appropriately utilizes skills.
