Position Purpose:

This position is assigned to the Maintenance Department at Torrance State Hospital with a working location in the Power House and works under the supervision of the Utility Plant Supervisor. Employee is responsible for skilled work in the daily operation and maintenance of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.

Description of Duties:

This position has limited direct care interaction, but the employee is expected to interact with adult and geriatric populations, as appropriate.

Duties include assuming responsibilities of operation of an assigned eight-hour shift by operating the necessary boilers and related equipment for the production of steam to assure adequate heat and hot water for the operation of the Hospital in accordance with DEP Title V Operating Permit.

When taking charge of a shift, employee works with Utility Plant staff in the operation of boiler/boilers and related equipment such as pumps, fans, turbines, ash handling, air compressors, etc., in a continuous production of steam and controlling of various pressures in and leaving the Power House by distributing and interpreting work assignments, providing assistance, demonstrating proper work methods and reviewing work for adherence standards.

Maintains uninterrupted hot water supply to various buildings.

Performs routine chores such as maintaining the proper water level in the boilers so as not to damage boilers.

Tests and chemically treats boiler water daily.

Maintains accurate records, changes boiler recording charts, takes readings and records all pertinent gauges on a prescribed time basis and enters all pertinent information in shift log.

Makes certain all Preventive Maintenance work orders are properly completed.

Makes systematic checks of all plant equipment and systems in operation during the shift to ascertain satisfactory performance. Reports any abnormal functions to Utility Plant Supervisor or Facility Operations Manager.

When necessary, assists in repairs and servicing of equipment and/or directs less senior employees.



Responsible for the enforcement of all safety policies, regulations, laws, rules and procedures required in the Power House.

Completes miscellaneous chores such as cleaning, taking inventory, researching data, etc., or as directed by Utility Plant Supervisor or Facility Operations Manager.

Performs asbestos abatement duties if employee is part of the Hospital asbestos program.


All duties are performed in accordance with Hospital rules, regulations and procedures to maintain required standards. Duties may vary in accordance with need and related duties may be assigned.

This position is assigned sole shift responsibility, handles overtime call offs as needed, and handles emergency situations as needed while following through with the Supervisor.
