Position Purpose:

Lake Erie Lifeguard Supervisors are responsible for managing a group of Lake Erie Lifeguards in addition to their Lake Erie Lifeguard duties and responsibilities. They perform public safety work and participate in supervising and training Lake Erie Lifeguards involved in patrolling, observing, directing, and monitoring a guarded beach area along Lake Erie at Presque Isle State Park preventing accidents in order ensure visitor safety.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Plans, organizes, and assigns work to subordinates; prepares and signs subordinates' performance evaluation reports; evaluates the training needs of subordinates and arranges for further education and training; demonstrates proper methods or techniques; and meets with subordinates to explain changes to rules, regulations, policies and standards for subordinates.

Supervises and participates in activities involving the rescue of swimmers in distress.

Administers first aid and/or CPR to injured park visitors.

Inspects swimming areas and safety equipment and supplies to ensure they are safe for public use.

Patrols, observes, directs, and monitors activities at a swimming area, from stations on shore stations to maintain order and to minimize the threat to swimmers and other park patrons by preventing accidents and drownings.

Remains alert always at assigned post. Scans the swimming area to prevent accidents and be prepared to respond to visitors in the event of an emergency.

Ensures compliance with the Bureau of State Parks' swimming rules and regulations following prescribed guidelines and procedures.

Inspects, or supervises the inspection of, buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition.

Inspects swimming areas by checking for unsafe conditions to ensure they are safe for public use.

Prepares and submits written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents.

Provides and participates in training sessions for Lifeguards to review and/or learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates.

Supervises and performs incidental maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use. Performs related work as required.

Has a detailed knowledge of the DCNR Lifeguard Manual.

Pass a skill assessment that includes but is not limited to swimming 50 yards in less than 32 seconds running 40 yards in under 6.5 seconds and swimming 550 yards in less than 9 min 40 seconds. Pass a hearing and vison assessment. Complete a 500-meter open water swim in under 10 minutes which will take place mid-season.

The employee assigns and reviews work and performs yearly evaluations for subordinate lifeguards and determines training needs. The employee continuously monitors the swimming area, to prevent accidents from occurring, determines when swimmers are in distress and need assistance and takes necessary action to assist. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and seeks compliance from park visitors. Personnel issues with subordinates that are of a serious nature are to be brought to a Lifeguard Managers attention.
