Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

An employee in this job class operates necessary equipment by driving trucks, snowplows, tractors, and lawnmowers, etc., in order to maintain the hospital grounds, buildings, and support services. This may include construction, garbage pickup, laundry delivery, storeroom delivery, furniture moving, snow plowing, salting and cindering, lawn mowing, and surplus food transportation. This position is under the direct supervision of the mechanic supervisor.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

1. Operates necessary equipment by driving trucks, snowplows, tractors, and lawn mowers, etc., in order to maintain the hospital support services.
2. Hauls materials used for construction, grounds or general maintenance work.
3. Operates equipment used in snow removal and cindering operations, as needed.
4. Operates tractor mounted grass and brush mowers, hi-lifts or front-end loaders with a bucket capacity of less than three cubic yards used in maintenance work and utilities operations.
5. Performs manual work when not operating trucks or equipment, including the loading and unloading of trucks.
6. Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment,
or assists automotive mechanics making major repairs to equipment.
7. Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintains records of operated equipment including those of commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, as appropriate.
8. Responsible for maintaining work areas, vehicles, and equipment in a clean/safe manner.
9. Performs other related duties by following the instructions of the supervisor or managers in order to provide for continuity of services. These other duties may include but are not necessarily limited to other trades work, laboring, housekeeping, grounds, and some equipment operation within your capabilities.

Makes independent decisions of a routine and recurring nature based upon established Hospital policies and guidelines, training, job knowledge and competency.

Communicates with Foreman, Supervisor and/or Facility Maintenance Managers for input on decisions regarding non-routine, unusual situations/circumstances and material acquisition.

Experience:

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Six months experience in the
operation and maintenance of large vans, buses and single-chassis
trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more.

Essential Functions

 1. Recognizes occupational hazards and follows safety precautions.
 2. Identifies defects in trucks and equipment; assists in repairs.
 3. Operates single chassis trucks, tractors, grounds care equipment, snow removal equipment.
 4. Uses and cares for hand tools, shop tools, and equipment. Responsible for maintaining inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
 5. Work may include climbing upon trucks ladders, loading areas, as well as within or on buildings.
 6. Comprehend assignments received orally or from work orders; records time and material used.
 7. Must Work cooperatively with other staff, patients, and outside personnel.
 8. Responsible for keeping work areas clean and neat and organized.
 9. Records time and materials used on a work order form or provided tracking sheet.
 10. Preforms heavy manual labor, must be able to sit, stand, kneel, twist, walk, climb, work in tight spaces, traverse even/uneven surfaces, etc...
