Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 70% Prime responsibility is the custody, care and control of inmates in the standard practices, methods and procedures in the repair and replacement of parts used on walk-in refrigeration coolers used for food storage, meat walk-in coolers, milk coolers, vegetable walk-in coolers, quick freeze walk-in cooler, walk-in deep freezers, ice cube machines, bulk milk dispensers, bakery walk-in coolers, roof air conditioners, window air conditioners, and other food service equipment. Schedule preventative maintenance programs and maintain accurate logs and records for compressor oil levels and conditions, oil leaks in compressors, refrigerant charge, condition and alignment of compressor drive belts for tension alignment and evidence of wear, compressor and motor bearing temperature and other areas where temperature measuring devices are provided, unusual noise and vibration, refrigerant piping system, lubricate motor bearings, and check operation of safety controls, including high and low pressure cutouts, oil failure switches on forced feed lubricated compressor and crank case heater thermostats. Plan and assign work to inmates receiving refrigeration mechanic training and review and inspect work in progress, and upon completion, for adherence to refrigeration mechanic trade standards. Participate in work activities of the refrigeration mechanic trade at journeyman level and assist inmate workers in the more difficult assignments.Use and explain sketches, drawings and blueprints. Issue and collect tools and insure compliance with and submit reports on this institution’s Tool Policy, supplies and materials required by inmate workers and requisition materials, supplies and equipment.Maintain order and discipline among inmate workers and search inmates and work area for contraband and insure security of work areas. I will be responsible for pat searching and using a metal detector each time an inmate leaves the shop area. Maintain maintenance and repair records, training programs, inventory and wage and attendance records. Work may be assigned and performed in areas other than the refrigeration mechanic trade in a manner consistent with organizational and operational requirements of the institution. Perform related work as required.Also, as directed by the Civil Service Commission, every week I have a minimum of two hours of formal classroom training. Traditionally, I maintain training progress records on each inmate assigned to me.I also control and inventory the flammable, caustic and toxic materials as described in the Department of Corrections’ Policy 15.3.5. 10% Issues and inventories all materials and tools used to complete work assignments. Conducts searches to ensure that all materials and tools are accounted for. 10% Determines materials and tools needed to complete refrigeration mechanic work assignments. Submits purchase requests for materials and tools as necessary. 10% Performs other related duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary 3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the refrigeration mechanic trade 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the refrigeration mechanic trade 12. Operate basic office equipment 13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 17. Visually observe inmates’ activities 18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff 19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 20. Travel as required |

Work is reviewed by daily inspection and the yearly performance evaluation. |
