Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provides a comprehensive program of oral and dental examination, diagnosis, and treatment for all patients at Torrance State Hospital. Provides consultative services to the Medical Staff regarding dental/oral diseases, deficiencies, malformations, or disabilities and recommends plans of treatment.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Conducts initial dental examinations within fifteen working days, annual dental examinations every 365 days or less, and annual hygiene visits as appropriate on all patients.
Provides comprehensive dental treatment to cooperative and uncooperative patients, including restorative, periodontics, endodontics, removable and fixed prosthodontics, dental impressions, minor oral surgery including extraction of non-restorable teeth, diagnostics including dental radiography and biopsy of abnormal oral tissue, and preventive dentistry.
Refers patients to specialists for further evaluation and treatment when requirements exceed the scope of care that can be safely provided in-house.
Completes all required documentation for initial exams and assessments, annual exams, treatments, hygiene checkups, and consultations within specified time frames. Instructs patients, or their caregivers, in proper care of their teeth and gums.
Assigns and monitors work daily for dental office personnel, and completes required performance reviews.
Conducts orientation training for all new professional and non professional nursing personnel in coordination with Staff Development.
Conducts inservice training for other dental staff.
Oversees operation of the dental lab to ensure safety and quality.
Recommends methods/procedures for coordination of dental services with other related clinical services.
Recommends purchase of new dental equipment/supplies. Provides dental department input for the hospital program plan and budget.
Attends inservice/outservice training as required to maintain appropriate level of competency and proficiency.
Participate in Continuing Dental Education to meet requirements set forth by the American Dental Association and the Pennsylvania Dental Association.
Serves on committees as appointed by the President of the Medical Staff, and prepares special reports as requested.
Performs other related work as required and assigned.

All work is performed independently with review through conferences or reports to the Chief of Medical Services. General direction on the overall operation of the department is received from the Chief of Medical Services.
